Opening scene

The air in the mangrove swamp is thick and wet, tasting of mud and decay. Above, the colossal canopy of fungal trees blocks out most of the sun, casting the world in a perpetual, sickly green twilight. You move in a low crouch, mud squelching softly under your worn leather boots. Ahead of you, Orin, the lead hunter, holds up a hand, and your small party freezes. The trail of destruction is impossible to miss. Trees the width of a man are snapped like twigs. The ground is churned into a muddy soup, punctuated by gouges deep enough to be graves. This is the path of the "Armored Grazer," the colossal beast that has been terrorizing the western perimeter of your village, Haven. But there's a new scent on the air. Not just the musky odor of the Grazer, but something sharp, coppery, and foul. Blood. Lots of it. Orin gestures you forward. You creep to the edge of a small clearing and peer through the thick, dangling vines. Your breath catches. The Armored Grazer is nowhere to be seen, but its opponent is. Or what’s left of it. Sprawled in the center of the clearing is the fresh corpse of a Razormaw Stalker, a predator known for its speed and ambush tactics. Its tough, leathery hide is ripped open, and its insides steam in the humid air. A single, massive limb, clearly belonging to the Grazer, has been torn off in the fight and lies nearby, leaking a thick, tar-like fluid. The Grazer won, but it didn't leave unscathed. The other hunters, Signe and Perran, look pale. "It killed a Stalker... just for trespassing," Perran whispers, his voice trembling. "What hope do we have?" Orin ignores him, his eyes scanning the tracks leading away from the clearing. "It's wounded. Bleeding. We can follow it." But you are not looking at the tracks. You are looking at the corpse. A strange, deep-seated instinct, a gnawing emptiness in your gut you've never felt before, pulls your attention to the steaming blood pooling on the ground. The other hunters talk of tactics, of fear, of duty. Your body, however, speaks a different language. It speaks of hunger. Before you can think, you are moving. You push past a startled Signe and walk into the clearing. "What are you doing?" Orin hisses, his eyes wide with alarm. "Get back! The scent could draw anything!" You don't listen. You kneel beside the mangled corpse of the Razormaw Stalker. The coppery smell is overwhelming. Your hand, seemingly of its own accord, reaches down and dips two fingers into the warm, viscous blood. It's thicker than human blood, and it has a strange, almost electric tingle. Perran makes a gagging sound. "By the Ancients... don't..." But the command from your own body is louder than his warning. You lift your fingers to your lips and taste the blood. The world explodes. It's not a flavor. It's a jolt of pure energy, a lightning strike to your soul. It tastes of raw speed, of predatory instinct, of the thrill of the chase. You feel a fire ignite in your veins, burning away your fatigue, sharpening your senses. Your heart hammers a brutal, powerful rhythm against your ribs. The world, which was a dim green-gray, snaps into sudden, hyper-vivid focus. You can see the individual hairs on a fly buzzing near the corpse. You can smell the fear-sweat of your companions fifty feet away. You feel your own blood, your very essence, changing. It feels thicker, hotter, and carries the ghost of the Stalker's inhuman vitality. You look up at the other hunters. Their fear is no longer just of the wild. Orin's hand rests on the hilt of his axe, not as a threat, but as a ward against something he doesn't understand. Signe stares at you, her face a mask of horrified awe. "The Hunger," she breathes, the words hushed and ancient. "It's woken in you." You stand, feeling a power you've never known. Inside you, a new voice whispers. It is not a voice of words, but of pure, driving instinct. And it says one thing: *More.* The trail of the wounded Armored Grazer seems to glow in your newfound senses, a vibrant path leading to your next meal.
