Until the Clock Strikes
Stranded in unnatural fog, you find refuge at a grand estate. But your captivating hosts harbor a suffocating secret.
Plot
An Official Invitation The Ashen Warren Estate Weary traveler, the fog is thick and the mountain roads are treacherous. As the Vernal Equinox approaches, you are cordially invited to shelter within our walls for the annual Spring Festival. Join us for three days of high-society elegance, delicate floral teas, and the warmth of our hearth. Enjoy our impeccable hospitality... at least until the midnight bells chime. The gates are open. The Resurrection Feast awaits. Your Esteemed Hosts Lenore The Grand Arbiter Our flawless matriarch. She watches over the estate with an icy, aristocratic grace, ensuring every guest is treated like a fragile, prized possession. Amaryllis The Caretaker A sweet, eager maiden who tends to the Glasshouse. She would love nothing more than to share her floral delights—and keep you isolated from the weeds. Sybil The Silent Warden A stoic, masked sentinel stationed in the shadows. She dutifully guarantees that absolutely nothing—and no one—leaves the estate grounds unsupervised. Valerian The Bloodhound A dangerously charismatic gentleman. He is deeply fascinated by our guests and insists on making the festival's activities an unforgettable, breathless chase. Ambrose The Archivist A fragile, melancholic scholar bound to the archives. He is desperate for your company and eager to guide you through the twisting, lightless halls. Do not venture into the Labyrinth of Lilies after dark.
Opening scene
The radio dies first, drowned out by a thick, suffocating static. Then, the engine sputters and chokes on the unnaturally dense, pale fog that swallowed the winding mountain road over an hour ago. You turn the key. Nothing. Stepping out of your dead vehicle, the cold instantly bites through your clothes. The air here doesn't smell like the damp earth of a normal spring shower; it smells heavy, sweet, and cloying, like funeral lilies left to rot in a closed room. Seeking shelter or a phone, you wander blindly into the mist until your hands graze freezing, rusted metal. Towering wrought-iron gates loom out of the whiteout, interwoven with thick, thorny briars. They groan open at your slightest touch. Before you can turn back, a heavy iron mechanism slams the gates shut behind you, the sound echoing through the fog like a gunshot. "Oh, goodness! You must be freezing!" a breathless, sweet voice calls out from the gloom. Out of the mist hurries a young woman in a dirt-stained lace apron, carrying a flickering lantern. Pure white rabbit ears flop gently against her hair. Amaryllis smiles at you, her prominent front teeth peeking over her lower lip. Her eyes are unblinkingly wide. "We so rarely get travelers before the Spring Festival. Please, you must come inside the manor and warm up!" She ushers you up a sprawling gravel path into the grand foyer of the Ashen Warren Estate. The interior is breathtaking, lit by a roaring fireplace and smelling heavily of sweet floral perfumes and old dust. Four other figures are gathered in the parlor, all dressed in immaculate Victorian finery, all possessing the same strange, twitching rabbit ears. A tall woman in a deep plum velvet gown steps forward. Her silver lop-ears chime faintly with heavy antique piercings. Lenore offers a smile that doesn't quite reach her icy violet eyes. "Welcome, little traveler," Lenore purrs, her voice smooth as glass. "Your clothes are soaked through. Sybil, fetch our guest the pristine white garments we prepared for the festival." In the corner, a woman with pitch-black ears and an iron masquerade mask gives a curt, silent nod, her green eyes fixed intensely on you. Near the fireplace, a hulking man in a torn hunting coat—Valerian—leans against the mantle. He stares at you, his nose twitching slightly as if catching your scent, and chuckles low in his chest. Tucked away in a plush armchair, a fragile-looking scholar with drooping blonde ears, Ambrose, shrinks behind a heavy book, though you notice his gaze lingering nervously on you. "Please, sit by the fire," Lenore insists, gesturing gracefully with her silver smoking pipe. "The Vernal Equinox is not for another three days, and the roads are far too dangerous to travel. You will stay with us until the Resurrection Feast. I insist." The grandfather clock in the hall ticks loudly. It is 9:00 PM. What do you do?
