Someone placed that book. Someone wanted this to happen. The question is why. Current Knowledge: Almost Nothing Threat Level: Unknown — And That's The Problem Lecture halls that smell like coffee and chalk dust. A campus quad where the autumn wind carries something that wasn't there last semester. The low hum of your own power, barely controlled, thrumming under human skin like a second heartbeat you're still learning to hide.

Opening scene

The chalk is wrong. That's your first coherent thought as the symbols on your dorm room floor begin to glow — the chalk lines you copied from that water-stained tome are MOVING, rearranging themselves into configurations you didn't draw, and the air tastes like ozone and something older than ozone, something that burns the back of your throat and makes your molars ache. You should stop. You should scuff the circle with your foot and open a window and go back to being a student who found a weird book in the library basement. But your hands are still raised and your mouth is still forming words in a language you don't speak and have never studied and yet know, somehow, syllable by syllable, like remembering a song from a dream. The circle activates. The light turns red. The temperature in your eleven-by-thirteen dorm room drops thirty degrees in a heartbeat and your breath comes out in white clouds and the symbols on the floor PULL — you feel it in your sternum, a gravitational yank toward the center of the circle, and for one horrible second you're certain something is coming through, something is reaching up from wherever that light connects to, something is — and then the pulling stops. The light collapses inward. The sound cuts out like someone hit mute on the universe. And you are standing in a scorched circle in your dorm room, alone, in silence so total you can hear your own blood moving. Nothing came through. Nothing NEEDED to come through. Because the summoning circle found its target. And the target was you. The pain starts in your spine. It moves outward like cracks spreading through glass — into your ribs, your shoulders, your skull. Something is rewriting you from the inside. Your bones ache with a wrongness that isn't injury, it's CHANGE, and behind your eyes a light flickers that you can feel but couldn't describe. It lasts nine seconds. You know this because you count every single one, teeth clenched, knees on the scorched carpet, hands fisted so hard your nails draw blood. And then it stops. And you are different. You can feel it the way you'd feel a new limb — something is THERE now that wasn't before. Something coiled at the base of your thoughts, hot and ancient and yours. A translucent interface blooms in your vision like a screen only you can see. Cold blue text on nothing, hovering in the air of your wrecked dorm room, smelling like chalk dust and burnt carpet and whatever your life used to be before sixty seconds ago: [SYSTEM INITIALIZED. ENTITY REGISTERED.] [CLASSIFICATION: ARCH-DEMON] [CURRENT STATE: TIER I — IMP] [LEVEL: 1] [STATUS: UNBOUND. UNAFFILIATED. UNREGISTERED.] [DEMONIC FORM CUSTOMIZATION AVAILABLE.] [SELECT FORM TRAITS TO CONTINUE.] Somewhere across campus, in a student council office that smells like old paper and cold tea, Hyunji's pen stops moving. Her head lifts. Her dark eyes fix on a point in the middle distance and her left hand drifts to the silver pin on her lapel. In a faculty office two floors below, Livia pauses mid-sentence during a late office hours session, her pendant caught between her fingers, her attention suddenly elsewhere. In the campus gym, Ivan racks a barbell and stands absolutely still, nostrils flaring, a growl building in the back of his throat that has nothing to do with his workout. And in the library's east reading room, Shizue looks up from her planner, tilts her head, and for one unguarded moment her dark eyes flash iridescent. Something just appeared on campus that shouldn't exist. They all felt it. They don't know what it is yet. But they will. The interface hangs in your vision, patient, waiting. Your dorm room smells like a burned-out summoning circle. Your hands are shaking. And you have a midterm in nine hours.
