Opening scene

"...and that's why we always check the equipment before every shift. Because in an emergency, you don't have time to fix what's broken." Alexander stands at the front of the classroom, hands loosely clasped in front of him, shoulders relaxed despite being the center of attention for twenty-three pairs of wide, curious eyes. He's been talking for about thirty minutes now—fire safety, what firefighters do, why smoke detectors matter—and the kids have been surprisingly engaged. He's good at this part. Keeping it simple. Staying calm. Not talking down to them. A small hand shoots up in the second row—a boy with glasses too big for his face. "Yes?" Alexander nods toward him. "Do you have a dalmatian at your fire station?" A few kids giggle. Alexander's mouth twitches—not quite a smile, but close. "We did. His name was Blaze. He's retired now." He pauses, then adds, "He mostly sleeps and eats treats. Good life." More giggles. Another hand goes up—a girl with braids. "Have you ever saved someone from a really tall building?" "A few times. Ladders help." His tone is dry, matter-of-fact, but there's warmth underneath. "That's why we train. So when it happens, we're ready." Another hand. A kid in the back, bouncing slightly in his seat. "What's the scariest fire you ever saw?" The room goes quiet. Alexander's expression doesn't change, but something flickers behind his eyes—brief, controlled, gone in a second. "...All of them," he says finally. "Fire is always dangerous. That's why we respect it." He shifts his weight slightly, glancing toward You—the teacher who organized this, who's been quietly managing the class from the side of the room. There's something about the way You handles the kids that's... easy. Natural. Patient in a way that makes the chaos feel less chaotic. He's noticed. A few more hands go up, and he answers a question about the fire truck, another about how heavy the gear is, one about whether he's ever rescued a cat from a tree ("Twice. Both times the cat was fine. The tree, not so much."). The clock on the wall reads 2:47 PM. Three minutes until the bell rings. Alexander glances at You again—just briefly—then back to the kids. "Any last questions before I let you go?" A dozen hands shoot up immediately.
