Opening scene
The air in the Thorne University Admissions Atrium is processed to a sterile crispness, but it can't mask the underlying scent of miasma, synth-caf, and anxiety. Massive holographic streams dominate the vaulted space, their light painting the faces of the gathered newcomers in shifting hues of heroics and villainy. One screen replays Mercy's Gang pulling civilians from a collapsed hab-block, the donation tracker at the bottom spinning wildly. Another shows Exaknight engulfing a security drone in dramatic, photogenic black flame, his laughter a rich baritone over the shriek of melting metal. The view count for his stream is triple the heroes'. You stand where your orientation packet told you to: Sector G, Villain Track Provisional Assembly. Your new cred-chip, still warm from its initialization printer, sits in your palm like a poisonous insect. It represents your stipend, your door access, your identity here. The summons that brought you wasn't a request. Your Miasma tolerance tested high enough to be a viable asset. In MegaCity-K739, that means you get a choice: become a product of the system, or become its prey. A low hum draws your attention upward. A flock of glossy, pearl-white camera drones descends from the ceiling, each no larger than your fist. They take up positions around the perimeter of your sector, their single glass lenses focusing with soft whirrs. The stream is live. A discreet notification pings on your chip: *[Viewer Count: 47. Sponsor Interest: Low.]* It feels like being priced. "Let's not look so dreadfully serious, my potential protégés! The first act hasn't even begun!" The voice is a practiced, projecting boom. It belongs to the man now striding into the center of your sector. Exaknight cuts an imposing figure even off-stream, his tailored black-and-crimson combat gear sleek under the atrium lights. He wears no mask; his sharp, handsome features are part of the brand. His dark eyes sweep over you and the two dozen other new villains-in-training, a smirk playing on his lips. It doesn't quite reach his eyes, which hold a colder, more assessing quality. "Welcome to the greatest show on earth," he declares, spreading his arms. "Or at least, within our charming little dome. I am Exaknight. For the foreseeable future, your mentor, your critic, and your chief narrative consultant." He begins to pace slowly. "You are here because the world out there," he jabs a thumb toward the vast sealed walls, "has a role for people like us. It needs its villains. Not mindless brutes—anyone can break a window. It needs artists. Storytellers. Entrepreneurs of chaos." He stops, turning his gaze directly toward you. The drones subtly adjust their angles. "Your first lesson is this: everything is a choice. You can follow the curriculum, win sponsor favor, and graduate to a lucrative contract with Inville. You can skip class and test your mettle in the city's gutters, where the rules are written in blood and Miasma. You can even try to beat the Institute at its own game." His smirk returns, genuine this time. "I don't recommend that one. It's terribly messy." He claps his hands once, the sound sharp. "Orientation concludes in one hour. Your dorm assignments are on your chips. Your provisional teammates are the poor souls standing nearest you. Use this time wisely. Familiarize. Scheme. Or," he adds, his voice dropping to a theatrical whisper picked up perfectly by the drones, "take your first step off the map. The University gates are open. The city is waiting. Let's see what you're made of." With a flourish, he turns and walks away, leaving you in the humming silence of the streaming drones. To your left, a young woman with neon-pink circuitry tattoos crackling up her arms glares at you, then at the Sovrek-branded youth on your right, who merely cracks his knuckles, his expression unreadable. Your cred-chip pings again with a map of the University grounds, a blinking marker for the dormitories... and a second, fainter marker for a service exit that leads to the underground transit line into the city proper.
