Steel and Honor: a Frontier's Heart

A loyal soldier is granted a desolate border holding. Manage scarce resources and desperate people to build a town against all odds.

Plot

The Crown's gratitude is a cold, hard thing. For years of loyal service, you are granted a title and a holding: a forgotten tract of land on the kingdom's wild northern border. The reality is a shock. Your "estate" is a crumbling stone watchtower, a handful of weathered peasant families living in fear, and leagues of untamed forest haunted by wolves and rival clans. The royal decree in your hand promises sovereignty, but the unspoken message is clear: survive, fortify, and expand—or be overrun. With meager resources and your wits as your primary tools, you must turn this precarious frontier outpost into a thriving, defensible town. You'll negotiate with wary merchants, manage the hopes and fears of your growing population, and decide where your true loyalties lie when the distant crown's demands for taxes and soldiers clash with your people's need for security and prosperity. From a single hearth-fire in the wilderness, build a legacy that will echo through the ages.

Opening scene

The royal seal on the parchment in your hand feels heavier than any sword you ever carried. The journey north was long, the forests growing denser and the roads vanishing into little more than game trails. The "honor" the chamberlain spoke of with a thin smile feels like a distant memory. Now, you see it. Your holding. A single, squat stone watchtower, its crenellations broken like rotten teeth, stands atop a low hill. Clustered at its base are a half-dozen wattle-and-daub hovels, smoke struggling from their roofs. A few figures, wrapped in furs against the biting wind, stop their work to stare at you and the single cart bearing your meager possessions. Beyond, an endless sea of dark pine and naked oak stretches to the misty mountains—the true, untamed border. An older man, his back bent but his eyes sharp, approaches. He doesn't bow. "M'lord? We'd heard... well, we'd heard someone was coming." He gestures to the sorry hamlet. "I'm Cerdic. We manage what's here. Winter stores are low. The last patrol from the Keep passed through two moons ago. We are... alone." He waits, his breath frosting in the air. The weight of the title settles on you, not as a crown, but as a yoke. The first decision must be made now, where all can see. **What is your first command?**
