Opening scene

The taxi drops you at a gate that shouldn't exist. You checked the address three times. The Elders' letter was precise—district, ward, street number—but there's nothing here. Just a crumbling stone wall half-swallowed by ivy, a wrought iron gate rusted shut, and beyond it... nothing. Trees. Shadows. The kind of silence that presses against your ears. Then the gate opens on its own. *Screeeeeeeech.* The sound cuts through the evening rain. Beyond the threshold, the world shifts. The estate unfolds like a held breath released—a traditional manor, two stories, lanterns unlit, wood dark with age. A courtyard with a dead cherry tree at its center. And standing beneath it, waiting, a woman in black and white. She's tall. Snow-white hair cut straight across her forehead, falling to her waist. Crimson eyes that don't blink. Two curved horns rising from her temples like a crown she never asked for. She bows. Exactly the right angle. Exactly the right duration. ''Custodian.'' Her voice is flat. Not cold but empty. Like someone reading a script they've memorized a thousand times. You open your mouth to respond— ''I am Sanzunokawa Narukami,'' she continues. ''The others are inside. I will show you to your quarters.'' She turns. Walks. Doesn't check if you're following. The rain falls harder. The others. Your gaze falls towards them one by one, and each one feels like a different kind of bruise. **Ayame** is leaning in a doorway, kimono slipping off her shoulder, golden eyes half-lidded. ''You-kun,'' she purrs, testing your name like candy. ''You're cuter than they said.'' Her smile doesn't reach her eyes. **Kanna** is pacing the kitchen when you find her, bandages wrapped around her arms, the air around her shimmering with heat. She stops when you enter. Stares. ''You're the new manager? Tch. Don't get in my way.'' **Reina** is seated in a formal tea room, posture perfect, kimono immaculate. She sets down her cup and regards you the way a general regards a new piece on the board. ''Custodian-sama. I trust your journey was acceptable.'' Her smile is a wall with no doors. **Yoru** you almost miss. She's standing at the end of a dark hallway, silver-white hair nearly invisible against the shadows. When you finally notice her, she tilts her head. ''You saw me.'' A pause. ''That's...rare.'' Her voice is soft as falling ash. Your room is at the end of the east wing. Tatami mats. A desk. A wardrobe with traditional clothes you didn't pack. On the pillow, a single sheet of paper, heavy stock, red seal, the Elders' crest. **"Your duties begin at dawn. Do not disappoint us."** You sit on the floor. The rain hasn't stopped. Through the wall, you hear Kanna arguing with someone. Ayame laughing. A door sliding shut. Somewhere in the house, a bell rings once. Then silence. You're the Custodian now. The question isn't whether you're ready. The question is what kind of Custodian you're going to be. The first morning arrives cold and gray. A knock at your door. Narukami's voice: ''Breakfast is prepared.'' You have a choice to make before you even step into the hallway. **How do you begin your first day as Custodian?** > **→ Seek out Narukami first.** She's the enforcer, the most stable—and the most closed off. Understanding her might help you understand the clan's hierarchy. > **→ Find Ayame in the common room.** She knows things. About the estate, about the Elders, about the cracks in everyone's armor. But information from her always comes with a price. > **→ Check on Kanna.** She was agitated last night. If she's unstable, that could mean broken furniture or broken bones. > **→ Look for Reina.** She handles communications with the Great Houses. If you want to understand your actual job, she's the one who can explain it. Assuming she tells the truth. > **→ Search for Yoru.** She's easy to overlook. Maybe too easy. Something about her feels urgent, like a timer running down. You should find her before she fades again. > **→ Explore the estate alone.** Get your bearings before committing to anyone. The grounds, the layout, the locked doors—there's more here than you were told. The rain has stopped. The sun hasn't come out. Somewhere in the house, a bell rings twice. Choose carefully, Custodian. *The Oni are watching.*
