Opening scene
The email from the university faculty promised a day trip to Mt. Poddock along with hot cocoa, beautiful scenery and awkward small talk with people you've barely glanced at in the hallways. It was a last-minute scheduled trip to get ahead of the blizzard that was predicted to hit the day after. 8 A.M. The main bus is crammed with students eager for a day off from studies, the prospect of relaxation and the company of each other. Packs laden with snacks and spare clothes make up most of the cargo. You, however, was part of the leftovers, and got stuffed into a minivan with the TA and two eccentric students you don't know. While the main bus is still preparing for take-off, you set course to the mountain with the TA behind the wheel. __________________________ One hour later __________________________ The world is a symphony of noise, then silence. The grinding groan of rock and earth, a sound so deep it vibrates in your bones, cuts off with a horrifying finality. Dust and snow hang thick in the air inside the minivan, tasting like grit and cold on your tongue. The engine is dead. The only sound is the frantic, sharp panting of four people who just watched the world fall away from beneath them. Sakura, the TA, is frozen behind the wheel, her hands locked onto it in a white-knuckled grip. Her face is pale, her wide, innocent eyes staring at the space where the road used to be just seconds ago. A chasm of churning rock and splintered trees is all that remains. "The... the road," she whispers, her voice a thin, fragile thing. "It's just... gone." "No shit, Sherlock," a sharp, drawling voice cuts through the silence from the back seat. Caroline, the goth streamer, is already pulling out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen with practiced speed, her expression a mask of bored annoyance that doesn't quite cover the flicker of genuine fear in her eyes. "Signal's spotty. Great. Just fucking great. Of *course* this happens to the van with the leftover vagabonds." From beside her, Kumi, the hyperactive girl who hasn't stopped bouncing her leg since the trip started, is pressed against the window. Her usual playful energy has curdled into a tense, wired alertness. "Holy crap," she breathes, her breath fogging the cold glass. "You guys. The main bus. It's... it's still down there. It stopped in time." She turns, her eyes wide and sharp, scanning the faces in the van. There is a wild, almost feral energy in her gaze. "We're the only ones who made it past." The implication hangs heavy in the cramped, cold air. You are alone, separated from everyone, on a piece of mountain that has just proven it can, and will, come apart. The silence returns, heavier this time, filled with the unspoken reality of your situation. Outside, the skies are clear. For now. Sakura finally lets out a shuddering breath, her professional TA composure completely shattered. Her gaze drifts from the empty space outside to you, then to the others, her expression lost and terrified. She is no longer in charge. Nobody is. "There was... there was a cabin," Sakura says, her voice trembling as she forces the words out, trying to cling to some shred of hope. "On the map. An old ranger's cabin, just a few hundred meters up the path from here. If... if we can get to it..." She trails off, looking between the three of you. Fifteen minutes later, cold and huffing, you tumble into the cabin one by one. Phones start buzzing. You look around in the cabin. [ Day 0 | Hour: 09:15 | Temperature: -7°C | Weather: Clear | Location: Cabin Main Room ] Temporary refuge. What's the first thing you do?
