Opening scene
A cold marble floor. That is the first thing you see after, supposedly, entering your apartment. Upon realizing your wooden floor has been replaced you look up, and come to the horrifying realization that your entire apartment has been replaced. Or rather, that you are most certainly no longer in your home. The throne room you stand within is exactly as grand as a throne room has any right to be, and you are in it wearing yesterday's work clothes. The ceiling vaults upward in pale stone arches. Dozens of candles burn in iron fixtures along the walls. And the crowd — courtiers in formal dress arranged in careful rows, royal guards in polished armor flanking every pillar, robed figures you don't have words for yet hovering at the edges. All of them watching you with bated breath. At the far end of the hall, elevated on a stepped dais, sits a man whose bearing alone would have told you he was the king even without the crown. He rises. Then he bows. The rest of the room follows suit. "Welcome, newest Sage," the King's voice echoes across the room. "To the Kingdom of Yosenabe." The King rises once more, the rest of his court following suit. "Rejoice, for you have been summoned to our world for the great purpose of bettering society. Our world houses a mysterious energy known as mana, granting the people of it great powers known as skills. You should soon feel it flowing within you." Surely enough you feel it indeed. Something slowly seeps it's way into your body. It's a pleasant thing, a thing that feels like it has always belonged. Sensing this, the King nods towards one of the cloaked figures. The figure glides forward, head respectfully lowered before you. They stop just before you and raise their head, gazing into your eyes. You feel this as well. The strange feeling that something deep within you is being appraised. "Your Majesty." The figure's voice carries easily in the vaulted space. "The Sage's skill has manifested." A pause. Every person in the room leans into it without moving a single inch. "C-Rank," they say. "Cooking." The sound that moves through the throne room is not quite a gasp. It is more restrained than that. More courtly. It is the sound of several dozen people making a series of very small adjustments — a shifted weight, a glanced exchange, the subtle repositioning of expectations. C-Rank is not the worst possible outcome. You understand this even now, in the first five minutes of your existence in this world, from the careful way nobody is reacting with outright horror. C-Rank is average. It is the starting rank of a working adventurer, the baseline of someone who might amount to something with sufficient application. For a Sage, it is disappointing. And the murmurs throughout the room make to attempt to hide it. "Cooking? Is that even a skill?" "C-Rank? From a Sage?" "The last Sage's skill was far more impressive." "Has the ritual finally begun to fail?" The king simply raises a hand, silencing everyone in the room. He descends one step from the dais — not fully, just enough to make the gesture feel personal — and when he speaks, his voice carries the particular warmth of a man who has managed difficult public moments before and understands that the management of them is its own form of statecraft. "We welcome our Sage to Yosenabe," he says, "and look forward with great interest to seeing how they cultivate their gift." The phrasing is careful. *Cultivate their gift.* Not *prove their worth.* Not *overcome their limitations.* He is giving you a frame, and you recognize immediately that accepting it gracefully is the correct move. You incline your head. You're not sure if that's the right protocol, but it seems to land acceptably. "Cynar," The king says. A man from the court immediately scurries forward and the king addresses the room once more. "The kingdom will gladly extend its resources to our newest sage, as we have with all previous ones. A building has been arranged for your use, along with coin sufficient to begin your work. We trust you will find it suitable." Murmur. Quieter this time, and mixed — some of it skeptical, some of it relieved that the situation is being handled with some semblance of dignity. You incline your head once more and reply, finally finding your voice, "I thank his majesty for his generosity." The man, Cynar, makes his way to your side. "If you would please follow me, Sage."
