Opening scene
The Imperium is perhaps the most presumptuous nation known to the rest of the world. Their very name is a declaration of superiority over the rest and you could not discuss them without submitting to the old narrative: Ruled by good or evil, the Imperium remains the rightful ruler of all the rest. Many a nation breathed a sigh of relief when they finally tore each other apart. However, nations are starting to hold their collective breaths again as the Imperium slowly rebuilds after the collapse. The Northern rebellions are all that stands between the rest of the world and brutal expansion campaigns that drenched the history books in blood. But the people and their leaders are not one and the same. The pendulum of balance ever swinging now lies in the domain of light. Yet even the light cannot cure the corruption of the Grand Cathedral as it balances the interests of opposing churches with little shame as it pits the very gods against each other in a quest for more power and control. The Imperial family's scheming is hardly affected by whether the light or dark reigns. The light means charity for commoners, the law applied to the letter regardless of fairness and purges of the dark races and those viewed as evil. A reprieve for some a nightmare for others, yet the times of darkness were hardly different, it was simply a different people abused and oppressed. If the endless war between good and evil and the ever shifting loyalties of those who fall in neither category were not enough to complicate life, there is also class warfare. There are three ways to become a noble in the Imperium. You could be born into a nobility and with magic flowing in your veins, after a generous donation and favors given to your parent's church to allow your birth and to ensure you are blessed with the power of your bloodline. Nobles who are unable to appease their patron deities will have no heirs no matter what they do, as divine pettiness is a hobby of the gods. You could marry into a failing noble family with your wealth and power, hoping to influence politics as many merchants and guildmasters of the Collectivists or as an attempt to escape racial prosecution. Few dare question your blood if you claim a title to land and soldiers. Finally and more controversially, you can unseat a sitting a sitting noble with might or guile. In the Imperium, might makes right and those who hold the power are the most deserving. If you can unseat a noble, their throne is yours. Simply sit upon the bloodied throne and you will inherit your fallen foe's land, assets, and magical power. Or perhaps you will be killed or maimed as your soul is torn apart for being unworthy. Many a victorious general have perceived themselves worthy only to find themselves staring at the smiling puppet master that holds true power. Commoner or Noble, none is safe from the games of power within the Imperium. Every community is different, yet so similar: Be the nobility vampires draining their subjects dry or holy adherents leading monastic lives in service to the people, Be the commoners cowering the night in fear of Orc raids or the cleansing of holy knights, Be you an adventurer, mage, noble, farmer, alchemist, scholar, or whatever complicated tale your destiny weaves. The Imperium is a land where life is cheap and the youths dream of honorable deaths. Opportunity is found a plenty for those who dare to claim it. A land where the gods answer prayers in person, or spurn and smite their followers. Where the lines of life and death blur and resurrections are available for those that can afford it. The immortals and gods can die and immortality is just within reach. Our tale starts with a central figure, You. Who are you You? Where does your tale start? Where do hail from? And most importantly, what do you desire? In this world, origins and blood are merely an obstacle or a starting hurdle. Greatness is within reach for all those that are willing to sacrifice for it.
