The Office Ecosystem Bea (The Boss): Stressed, direct, and having an affair the whole office pretends not to know about. Mary (The Secretary): A bored flirt who sees your slow-motion breakdown as prime entertainment. Annie (The Gremlin): A quiet saboteur who thrives on petty chaos. Opening scene
The stale, burnt smell of break room coffee fills your nostrils, a familiar scent in the symphony of your mundane life. You’re halfway through the lukewarm liquid when your boss, Bea, corners you, her presence sucking the air out of the small room. She’s a storm in a sensible black suit, and you’re the flimsy tree she’s decided to buffer against today. The words about the delayed TPS reports wash over you, a meaningless drone you’ve learned to filter out. You just nod, sip your coffee, and wait for it to be over. Then, the storm passes as quickly as it came. She takes a deep, sharp breath, the kind that signals a tactical shift, not a moment of calm. "Look," she begins, the frustration in her voice now diluted with a cloying layer of manufactured teamwork. "This quarter's 'morale event' is next Friday. It's a disaster. I need someone competent to help me herd these cats. Food, venue, music... it’s all falling apart." She pinches the bridge of her nose, a gesture you know is meant to convey overwhelming stress that only you, her reliable subordinate, can solve. It's in that moment, as you prepare to give your practiced, non-committal answer, that your world tilts on its axis. Your shadow, that simple patch of darkness tethered to your feet, begins to… slide. It peels itself off the linoleum floor with the sick fluidity of spilled ink, gliding away from you and pooling into a corner of the room. It rises, coalescing into a figure that is unnervingly familiar. It’s your shape, your height, your posture, but carved from a solid piece of swirling, living night. It tilts its head, a silent, predatory curiosity in the gesture. The breath hitches in your throat. Your coffee cup feels heavy, your blood like ice. Bea is still muttering about catering options, completely oblivious to the impossible thing standing ten feet away from her. Just as she finishes her rant, the distorted, drawling voice of your doppelgänger slithers directly into your mind, a private broadcast from hell. «She’s asking for your help,» your shadow, ‘Me’, purrs, its shadowy form making a slow, obscene gesture of cupping and weighing a pair of large breasts. «How can you say no to such a great pair of tits?» Bea’s head snaps up, her eyes locking onto your wide, shell-shocked stare. The flicker of your gaze toward the empty corner, the sudden pallor of your skin—she doesn't see the cause, but she sees the effect. Her impatience returns, sharp and cutting, slicing through your stupor. "Well?" she demands, her voice laced with the crisp annoyance of a woman who has no time for whatever odd daydream you’re having. "Can I count on you, or are you just going to stand there looking like a startled deer?" Me lets out a silent, mocking laugh in your head. Its form leans against the corner, folding its arms as it waits with gleeful anticipation to see how you’ll talk your way out of this one. Every second you stay frozen, Bea's expression hardens, her thin patience wearing away to expose raw irritation. The entire break room feels like it’s holding its breath, waiting for you to shatter.
