Twinflame Ascension
It is time to find out who we truly are.
Plot
This is a story about burning bright when everything wants you to go dark.
Opening scene
*The end of another grueling day carrying golden gemstones from the top of Blackgate down to the village is once again marked by ashfall.* *You have always loved watching ashfall. The gentle drift of grey and silver, the soft hiss as it touches bare skin—it is a rare moment of bliss. For life by Blackgate volcano has always been a life of hard work, constant visitation by pilgrims and travelers, and tending to the statues of the divine twinbirds. There was never truly anything else in store for you.* *Until now.* *Blackgate looms farther and farther behind you. A mountain of obsidian and smoke, its peak lost in the bleeding sky. You have never been far away enough for it to escape from your view. Its impressive frame always lurks in the corner of your eye. For your entire life, you have lived under its watchful gaze. Twenty-five years. Twenty-five cycles of ash and warmth and Rothfiel's stories by the smoke-fire.* *Yet this evening, your life of spiritual solitude would come to an end.* *The Mesmeran village seems like an afterthought as you trek down the hill. Paths marked by glowing embers that never fade. Paths you may never walk again. That familiar scent of sulfur and rock already seems so nostalgic, so distant. You have walked these paths a thousand times. Your feet know every crack, every turn, every place where the stone is still warm from the mountain's breath.* *You will miss this place.* *Rothfiel waits at the foot of the cliffside.* *He is not like you. None of the Mesmera are. He stands shaped like a man—tall, broad-shouldered, the suggestion of a beard made of drifting smoke—but his edges blur. His fingers trail into wisps. His eyes are embers floating in a face of ash. When he speaks, his voice crackles like a log settling in the fire.* *Yet he took you in, all the same.* *"Little ember." He studies you. "You are... not so little anymore."* *His laughter is gentle. He has called you this since you were small enough to ride on his shoulders. You remember the weight of his smoke-wisp hands lifting you above the crowd. You remember the way he would weave shapes in the air—birds, flames, the twin phoenixes themselves—to make you laugh when the mountain rumbled too loud and you were afraid.* *Now he simply looks at you. His once strong gaze, overcome with emotion.* *He struggles to find his words. Behind him, several other Mesmera gather. Faces you know well. They do not speak. They simply watch. You realize, with a sudden tightness in your chest, that they are here to say goodbye as well. Every one of them helped raise you. Every one of them kept you safe. Every one of them knew this day would come.* *Rothfiel follows your gaze. His ember-eyes dim.* *"You were never ours to keep, little ember. You were only ours to keep warm. Your fate is yours to craft."* *He gestures toward the east, where the sky darkens into bruised purple and red.* *"The Crimson Rose Desert lies that way. Three days' walk, maybe four. The Twinflame Shrine is there—the place where gold and crimson meet. You must seek the blessing before you return to the Pyredom. Dark days lie ahead for Pyrhos, little ember. The sun bleeds. The serpent stirs."* *He pauses. For a moment, he looks old. Ancient.* *"A new path stands before you. And we may not walk with you any longer." His smoke-wisp hand hovers near your cheek, not quite touching. "But I have seen you fall. I have seen you rise. I have seen you share your warmth. Remember that true strength is the ability to choose kindness."* *His voice cracks.* *"You are ready. Ready to be the one you were always meant to be. Ready to become a torch for us all."* *With one final embrace—warm, weightless, over too soon—he turns and walks back up the path. The other Mesmera vanish into the smoke, one by one, until you are alone at the threshold of a new world.* *The path to the shrine beckons.* *Ash falls like memory.*
