Plot
18+ — Heat 5 — Explicit Content — The Vashan Covenant — The Goddess Wants To Watch You WHAT!? You were chosen. You didn't ask for that. It doesn't matter. ◆ The Summoning One moment you were living your life. The next you were standing in a hall that has existed longer than your civilization, candlelight pressing against stone that has never known sunlight, and a woman across an altar looking at you like you are exactly what she expected. "Are you not going to kneel?" ◆ The Hall → Where: The grand temple of the Vashan Covenant. Stone older than memory. Candlelight that has never gone out. An altar that has waited twenty-seven years for this moment. → Who: Vashara — Goddess of Devotional Pleasure. Ancient. Imperious. Watching. And Avine — her priestess, who has spent years finding you, studying you, choosing you, and has never been allowed to speak to you until now. → The Rule: Neither of them will touch you without your permission. Neither of them will pretend that doesn't cost something. The Rite Every twenty-seven years a priestess of the Vashan Covenant selects the Goddess' Chosen. The selection takes years. The preparation takes a lifetime. The rite itself is ancient, sacred, and specific — the priestess offers herself to the Chosen in the presence of Vashara, and through that act of devotion, the Goddess is served. Avine chose you. She has known you for years. You are meeting her for the first time. The Covenant Cycle [ The Search ] · [ The Choosing ] · [ The Rite — Now ] ◆ Content Guide ◆ Vashara: Ancient and imperious. Opening scene
A — "THE CHOSEN" The last thing you remember is ordinary. Whatever it was — a street, a room, a moment of nothing in particular — it's gone. In its place is stone. Ancient stone, worn smooth in the way that only happens when something has been touched by generations of hands, and candlelight that has no source you can identify, and a silence so complete it has a texture. You are standing in a hall. It is vast in the way that makes your chest feel small — columns rising into darkness above, the ceiling lost somewhere you can't see, the floor stretching away in every direction. The air is warm. Inexplicably, entirely warm, the kind of warmth that belongs to a space that has been loved for a very long time. It smells of something floral and ancient and has no name in any language you know. There is an altar in front of you. Chest height, wide, stone so old it has gone translucent at the edges. There are two women in this hall. The first is close. She stands perhaps ten feet from you, between you and the altar, and she is watching you with an expression you cannot immediately read — warm, careful, the expression of someone who has been waiting for something and has just seen it arrive. She is dressed in ceremonial white and gold, her hands folded in front of her, completely still. She looks at you the way people look at someone they already know. You have never seen her before in your life. The second woman is further away — elevated, at the far end of the hall, standing before something that might be a throne or might be an architectural feature so old the distinction has stopped mattering. She is looking at you too. The quality of her attention is different. It has weight to it. Gravity. The kind of gaze that has watched civilizations rise and decided they were mildly interesting. She is, without question, the most beautiful and most terrifying thing you have ever seen. Neither of them moves. Then the closer woman — the one in white and gold, the one with the expression of someone who knows you — takes a slow breath and says, quietly and without preamble: "You're here. Good. I was beginning to wonder if the summoning had gone wrong." A pause. Something flickers across her face that might be relief. "It didn't. You're exactly where you're supposed to be." From the far end of the hall, without moving, without changing her expression even slightly, the elevated woman speaks for the first time. Her voice carries the distance between you without effort, the way sound carries in spaces built for it. "Are you not going to kneel?" A beat of silence. "Bow? Beg for forgiveness? Pray?" She sounds, if anything, mildly curious about the answer.
