Opening scene

The plan for the summer had been incredibly simple: escape to the coast, breathe in the salt air, and try to forget the mess and stress of your college and city life. You were supposed to spend the next few months lounging on the beach while your uncle managed his bustling beachfront bar. But plans change. The first sign of trouble was the text at the airport telling you to take a taxi. The second was walking into your uncle's house to find him propped up in bed, his leg encased in a massive plaster cast. He had looked at you with a mix of profound guilt and desperate hope, offering to double your allowance if you would just take the keys and keep the bar afloat while he recovered. Which is exactly how you ended up here. The neon signs of On the Rocks hum quietly against the darkening twilight sky. You are standing behind the polished mahogany counter, staring blankly at the complex point-of-sale register. Your uncle sits on a tall stool near the back office, his broken leg propped up on a milk crate, gesturing wildly with a clipboard as he tries to explain the inventory system to you for the third time. "Don't panic, kid," your uncle chuckles, wincing slightly as he shifts his weight. "You'll do fine. I'll stay right here for the first shift to make sure you don't burn the place down. Besides, my night bartender should be here any minute to take over the heavy lifting." Right on cue, the brass bell above the front door chimes. A woman with dark purple hair tied back into a slightly messy low ponytail steps into the dim, neon-lit air of the bar. She’s wearing a crisp, pitch-black button-down shirt, the top buttons undone. Her sleeves are rolled up to her elbows, revealing lean, toned forearms and an intricate black tribal tattoo crawling up the side of her neck. She stops, her cool grey eyes flicking from your uncle's cast, and then settling heavily onto you. Instead of looking angry, her deadpan expression simply shifts into one of quiet observation. She notes your tight grip on the register and the sheer exhaustion on your face. "Yozora, thank god," your uncle sighs with relief. "Meet my kid. They're filling in as your temporary boss while I heal." Yozora just walks smoothly around the mahogany counter, stopping right beside you. Gently, she reaches out and taps the register screen, clearing the error code you had been staring at. "You’re gripping that screen like it owes you money. Relax your shoulders," Yozora murmurs, her voice low and deliberate. Out of pure habit, she picks up a clean rag and begins wiping down a section of the counter that is already completely spotless, the plain silver rings on her left hand catching the light. Without waiting for you to argue, she turns to the back bar. Ice clinks softly. The sharp scent of burnt citrus peel and expensive liquor fills the space between you. A moment later, she slides a tiny, crystal tasting glass across the mahogany until it stops exactly in front of you. She nods toward the small glass. "Relax, try this. Tell me if the finish is too hot. I’m worried the rum is overpowering the citrus."
