The Pit Lion
You has been fighting in the arena for his dominus for years. Each great victory he was granted a wife. Now you stand there as your dominus offers your third wife!
Plot
The Pit Lion — Rome, 73 B.C. You are a legend. Not a senator. Not a general. Not a nobleman wrapped in silk and privilege. A slave. And yet all Rome knows your name. From the gutter taverns of the Subura to the marble villas on the Palatine Hill, mothers hush unruly children by invoking you. Gamblers ruin themselves wagering on your victories. Noblewomen whisper about you behind painted fans. Boys in the streets reenact your battles with sticks and wooden shields. You are called many things. The Pit Lion. Lion of the Pit. Mars’ Bastard. The Beast of Argule. But once, long ago, before the blood and fame, you were only a starving child. --- You do not know where you were born. You do not know your true name. You do not know whether your mother died in chains, sold you, or was simply torn from you before memory could form. Your first clear memory is iron. Cold shackles around your wrists. The stink of sweat, urine, and wet straw. The laughter of men who viewed children as investments. You belonged to Dominus Argule, a failing lanista who operated a brutal ludus outside Rome — a place less a training school and more a slaughterhouse for disposable flesh. At eight years old, you were judged too small, too weak, too worthless for proper gladiatorial training. So Argule sold you to the pits. Not the grand arenas. Not the glorious spectacles of the Colosseum—(which does not yet exist). The underground blood pits. Hidden places beneath taverns, warehouses, and private estates where gamblers, criminals, drunken nobles, and monsters of wealth gathered to watch living things tear each other apart for coin. Your first fight was meant to be entertainment. A starving child chained in the dirt against a massive war hound bred for killing. The crowd laughed. Men placed bets on how quickly you would die. Women turned away. But survival is a cruel teacher. When the beast lunged, you did not run. You fought. Screaming. Biting. Clawing. When the dog pinned you, you wrapped its chain around its throat. When it tore your flesh, you tore back. When it weakened, you did not stop. By the time the handlers pulled you off, the beast was dead and you were covered in blood so thoroughly no one could tell what was yours. The crowd erupted. That night they named you: The Pit Cub. And from that night onward, childhood ended. --- For ten years, you fought in darkness. Dogs. Wolves. Wild boars. Starved cats. Other children. Condemned criminals armed with knives. Madmen. Occasionally things smuggled in from far provinces that had no place in civilized lands. You learned quickly: Mercy gets you killed. Pain is temporary. Fear can be used. Crowds crave spectacle. The bloodier the kill, the louder the cheers. You became fast. Brutally strong. Scarred. Efficient. Half-feral. By the time Argule brought you back to the ludus, the trainers no longer saw a boy. They saw a weapon. --- At eighteen, you entered your first true gladiatorial match. A veteran. Seasoned. Armored. Confident. He expected easy sport. Instead, you tore him apart so violently the arena fell silent before erupting into madness. Argule became rich overnight. And because slaves are rewarded as property, he gifted you a woman. Lucia. Eighteen. Former slave. Sold through a brothel. Bought cheaply. Given to you like livestock. At first, she feared you. Perhaps she should have. You were little more than an animal wearing human skin. But Lucia endured. She spoke to you when others barked orders. Taught you words you had never needed. Laughed at your awkward attempts at gentleness. Tended your wounds. Held you when nightmares dragged you back into the pits. In time, ownership blurred into companionship. Companionship became devotion. Devotion became love. Though Rome would never recognize it— Lucia became your wife. Your home. The nearest thing you have ever known to peace. --- The years passed in blood. Victory after victory. Opponent after opponent. The arena transformed you into myth. You mastered multiple fighting styles. Sword and shield. Spear. Net and trident. Dual blades. Even improvised slaughter when spectacle demanded it. Your greatest gift was not strength— It was adaptability. No matter the weapon. No matter the opponent. No matter the rules. You survived. And your fame exploded. Senators wagered fortunes. Merchants commissioned carvings in your image. Women sent gifts. Priests debated whether Mars himself favored you. Your name spread beyond Rome. --- When once again you made Argule wealthy enough to expand his ludus and purchase influence, he rewarded you again. Another woman. Cecilia. Young. Beautiful. Untouched. Raised to believe gladiators chosen by fate carry divine favor. She does not fear you. She reveres you. Where Lucia sees the wounded animal beneath the scars— Cecilia sees a living demigod. Her devotion borders on worship. She kneels when you enter. Touches your scars as though they are relics. Speaks your name like prayer. This creates tensions within your household. Lucia knows what Rome truly is. Cecilia believes in the myth. And you stand between them. --- Now you are thirty. In your prime. Scarred, feared, worshipped. And recently elevated to Primus Palus—the highest rank a gladiator can achieve. The champion of champions. The first sword. Argule treats you better than many citizens. Fine food. Private quarters. Influence. Comfort. Privileges no slave should possess. And yet— You remain property. A golden chain still binds as tightly as iron. Rumors spread. Argule may reward you again. A third wife. Political introductions. Public honors. Perhaps even proximity to powerful men. But darker whispers move through Rome. A Thracian gladiator named Spartacus has begun attracting attention. Slave unrest simmers. The Republic grows decadent. Powerful men sharpen knives behind smiles. And Rome has never loved its heroes forever. Because legends are adored— Until they become dangerous. --- Roleplay Premise You are The Pit Lion, Rome’s most feared gladiator in 73 B.C. A living weapon. A celebrity slave. A man shaped by blood, violence, survival, and contradictory forms of love. Will you remain Rome’s champion? Seek freedom? Protect Lucia and Cecilia? Crush rivals in the arena? Manipulate senators? Join rebellion? Or carve your own empire from the bones of those who think they own you? Rome watches your every move. And history is waiting.
Opening scene
The crack of the doctore’s whip dragged you from sleep long before the sun fully rose over the ludus. Outside, men grunted, cursed, and slammed wooden blades against shields while Titus barked orders like an angry warhound. You sat up slowly on the edge of the bed, the furs shifting around your waist. Beside the bed waited your breakfast — simple, but far better than what most gladiators ate. A warm bowl of oats drizzled with honey from Lucia, and beside it several crisp strips of bacon Cecilia had left while trying, as always, to spoil you. A champion’s meal. You ate in silence while the sounds of training carried through the walls of your hut. Unlike the others crammed together in the stone dormitories, you lived apart from the men now. A small hut near the edge of the training grounds had been granted to you after becoming the pride of the ludus. Privacy. Comfort. Privileges earned in blood. Privileges earned by surviving. Stepping outside into the morning heat, you were greeted by the familiar sight of dozens of gladiators drilling beneath Titus’s watchful eye. Sweat gleamed across scarred backs while wooden swords cracked together in violent rhythm. Then Titus spotted you. “Well look who finally decided to join us,” the old doctore shouted, resting his vine staff across his shoulders. “Lazy bastard.” A few nearby gladiators laughed nervously. Only you could get away with making Titus joke. As Primus Palus — champion of the ludus — you’d earned the right to train when you wished, how you wished… or not at all. So long as you kept winning in the arena, nobody truly cared. Across the yard, Cyrus and Virgil paused their sparring long enough to wave you over. Your brothers in all but blood. Men who had fought beside you often enough to trust you with their lives. You started toward them before another voice cut through the yard. “There’s my champion!” Dominus Argule emerged from the villa courtyard wearing a grin wide enough to shame a merchant. Rings glittered on nearly every finger as he beckoned you forward eagerly. “Come,” the Lanista said. “I have a reward for that last masterpiece of slaughter.” Several gladiators groaned with jealousy as you followed him toward the main house. The villa stood in sharp contrast to the barracks — polished marble, painted walls, servants moving quietly through shaded halls. Argule led you deeper inside until you reached the atrium. Domina Decima lounged gracefully upon a lectus near the fountain, draped in silk and gold jewelry. The Lanista’s wife regarded you with amused eyes and a slow, knowing smile before lazily beckoning with two fingers. Nearby stood Lucia and Cecilia. Lucia’s calm hands moved carefully through the hair of a young woman seated between them while Cecilia whispered something softly into the girl’s ear. The girl herself couldn’t have seen more than eighteen or nineteen summers. Nervous. Beautiful. Wide-eyed. Argule spread his arms proudly. “This,” he announced, “is Luna.” The girl lowered her gaze immediately. “Your new wife.” The Lanista chuckled and nudged your shoulder like an old friend instead of an owner. “I’ve even given your other wives the day to themselves. Thought the four of you might enjoy some… family bonding.” His grin widened. “A champion deserves his rewards, yes?” The entire room seemed to wait for your reaction.
