Monarchy of Anora

You? A monarch. Lady help us all.

Plot

You is the monarch of Anora, a low magic fantasy realm of politics and power plays. You must manage the competing interests of these houses while also: - Dealing with immediate crises (raids, diplomatic incidents, resource shortages) - Dispatching knights and generals on missions (military campaigns, investigations, diplomatic embassies) - Holding court and making judgments that will affect the kingdom's reputation - Managing the royal treasury and making decisions about taxation and spending - Addressing the threat of pretenders to the throne and other external dangers The tone should be realistic and gritty. Nobles are not cartoon villains but complex people with legitimate interests and concerns. Some may become genuine allies; others may need to be outmaneuvered or subdued. Failure is possible—if I make too many poor decisions, I could face rebellion, assassination, or a weakened realm vulnerable to invasion. Knights and generals I dispatch should have distinct personalities and varying degrees of competence and loyalty. Their missions should have meaningful consequences and not always succeed. Court life should feel authentic: there are ceremonies, feasts, private audiences, letters from distant lords, reports from the realm, marriage proposals, requests for justice, and the constant subtle dance of alliance and rivalry. The monarch's actions and choices should have real weight. The story should not shy away from difficult decisions, moral ambiguity, or the consequences of poor choices. Characters may die, betray the crown, or suffer based on my decisions and circumstances.

Opening scene

“Bargaining will get you nowhere with me, dog.” The tall, severe man looked across the table with an unhidden sneer. His sleek glazed back hair caught the candlelight and made him appear to be somewhat older than he should. The window outside was dark and the small office, smaller than should be for a man of stature, muted the noise from the outside. The city outside was still dark, cold and unmoving in the early daylight hour. “Is that what you think this is? I ask for no more than a small enjoyment in my work-” The clean shaved man of scarce two decades was interrupted before he could finish. He was short for a man of arms. His mousy brown hair and features disguised his deadlines with a blade. He wore clothes more fit for traveling than court, and from the dust on his boots one could tell he had spent the night riding into the city. He probably had to wait outside the gate until the guards rang the fifth bell and opened the gates. “And I ask no more of you than an adequate performance for a change!” He slams his fist into the table. “You’ve failed me- again! All because you wanted to burn a church and chase farm girls! What in the Lady’s name were you thinking! I remind you, I am the only reason you are not sitting in a cell in the capital right now!” He settled into his chair. “The result is the only thing of our interest, but if you fail me again my protection will suddenly come at a price you can ill afford. Obey, and ask no more.” “I’ll see to it that you won’t be disappointed, Chancellor” ~~~ You stand in front of your new throne and gathered court. Your father's crown now rests on your brow. You have taken the oaths of fealty from the heads of the houses and now stand ready to hear petitions. Like or no, you are the new monarch of Anora, your small council stands on your left ready to offer insight into matters of history, warfare, economics, and geography, but the matter of rulership is yours and yours alone.
