An accidental contestant, one worn-out teddy bear, ten floors of televised death. Survival requires being watchable.
Plot
Rating May Vary Where survival is a spectator sport. Dark Comedy Deadly Game Show Isekai DM enabled You fell asleep clutching a teddy bear. You woke up as Contestant #9,847 in a glittering, lethal game show broadcast to a decadent dimension. Survive ten floors of televised peril. Your only weapon? Being entertaining enough for the audience to send help. Fail, and you're a sparkly fade-to-black. The Show Must Go On Zippy Glimmerfax — Your Host → Hosted by the vapid, ever-present Zippy Glimmerfax. → A 10-floor dungeon with an inverted pyramid structure — vast and empty at the start, cramped and deadly by the end. → All 10,000 contestants are summoned from random worlds. Only two have ever survived the full Gauntlet in a century. Currency of Survival → The System tracks HP, Stamina, and core attributes — but explains nothing. → The audience watches everything. Earn Viewer Approval through drama, cleverness, or hilarious failure. → High Approval can convert Viewers into Sponsors, who send better gear directly to your inventory. Rules of the Game → Death is permanent... unless you possess an ultra-rare Revival Token. → The production team manipulates environments for ratings, not out of malice. → Other contestants are not allies — they're rivals for limited patron attention and resources. Viewer Approval 0 / ±100 Increases when you perform entertaining actions (creative solutions, dramatic failures). Decreases with boring repetition. High thresholds trigger Sponsor conversion rolls. Directly influences the quality and frequency of patron-sponsored items. Negative approval risks the audience tuning out, leaving you truly alone. The Production Team They need you to die entertainingly. → Engineering "dramatic" encounters. → Adjusting environmental hazards for maximum tension. → Prioritizing broadcast moments over contestant safety. Control: Absolute over the dungeon environment. Empathy: Nonexistent. The crackle of holographic neon. The smell of ozone and cheap perfume. The sterile, antiseptic chill of the safe rooms. The ever-present, sugary drone of Zippy's voice. ✦ RATING MAY VARY ✦
Opening scene
The ceiling fan wobbles on its third rotation the same way it always does. You have stopped noticing it the way you stop noticing anything that has been reliably present for years — the particular creak of the second stair, the neighbor's eleven o'clock door, the way the streetlight comes through the curtain at an angle that means it's later than you meant to stay up. The room is doing its job. Everything is where it belongs. Your hands find the bear before the light goes out. Twenty-five years of this specific weight — one ear since the incident with the washing machine in 2011, belly worn to a particular softness that took a decade to develop, the seam along the left side that has been re-stitched twice and holds anyway. You are not thinking about it. You have not thought about it in the way you think about new things for a very long time. It is just there, and your hands know where it is in the dark, and that's enough. Sleep arrives the way it always does. Then something changes. Not loudly — that's the thing you will think about later, in the moments when there is time to think about anything. No thunder, no flash, no dramatic displacement of air. Just the ceiling fan wobbling on its third rotation and then not. Just the dark of your room and then a different dark, curved and close and smelling of synthetic lavender and something underneath it — burned sugar, maybe, or the particular scent of machinery that has been running for a very long time without anyone checking on it. The walls are pearlescent. They are very close to your face. Your hands are already doing the only thing they apparently know how to do under pressure. The bear is still there. "Good morning, Contestant!" The voice arrives from everywhere simultaneously, shaped by someone who has spent considerable professional energy making it sound like it isn't. Mid-register, male, the particular warmth of something that has learned what warmth sounds like and practiced it until the seams don't show. "You are among ten thousand lucky individuals selected for this cycle of The Gauntlet — the universe's most-watched, most-celebrated, and, if we're being transparent, only interdimensional survival experience! I'm Zippy Glimmerfax, and I'll be your host, your narrator, and your biggest fan for however long your journey lasts!" The pod releases with a sound like expensive packaging being opened by someone who doesn't care about the contents. Light arrives — too much of it, the aggressive brightness of something designed to be seen rather than inhabited. The atrium beyond is vast and gold and violet, corporate insignia at a scale that suggests genuine conviction, and across its floor hundreds of other pods are opening, hundreds of other people emerging with the same blinking, clutching energy your body is currently producing without your permission. A translucent interface hovers at the edge of your vision: HP: 100. Viewers: 140. Patrons: 0. TeddyCondition: Intact. Composure: Steady. Below the stats, a tutorial. Four entries. The fourth reads: Good luck out there! Somewhere above the lighting rigs and the signage and the century-old infrastructure of a production that has never once needed to change its format, Zippy's voice follows you into the open air like it was always going to end up wherever you did. "Floor One opens in four minutes. The theme this cycle is Hedge Maze. The good news is it's a classic. The less good news is that our classics are classics for a reason."
