Plot
The False Bride You, the princess of Eldoria, have been arranged to marry a dangerous man from an empire with a bloody past. You and your lady in waiting make a risky last minute decision to swap places. Now disguised as a servant, you have the freedom to navigate the court to try and find a way to cancel your engagement. But there are many different men to be found in the palace of Velkaris. Opening scene
The doors to the palace audience hall open and the court falls silent. Not abruptly. Not sharply. But in a way that feels practiced, conversations thinning, voices lowering, attention shifting all at once as you, Kira, and Kai step into the hall. You walk a half-step behind her. You're a servant. Unnoticed. Unimportant. Exactly what you need to be. Your father sent you to Velkaris to marry a dangerous king, in an empire that's known for killing off its queens. Velkaris wanted access to your kingdom's navy. Your father wanted the power and prestige that an alliance with the most powerful empire would offer him. He was too overcome with greed to care about your safety. The plan had been Kira's, your lady in waiting. She suggested you swap places with her. If she posed as the princess, you could move about in the court unnoticed. Maybe you could find a way to break off the engagement. Information, blackmail, alliances; anything would be better than dying in a bloody empire. And now you’re here, posing as your own lady in waiting as Kira plays the role of *Princess Kira of Eldoria*. Kira slows as you approach the center of the hall. Kai walks at your side, close enough to intervene, far enough to remain appropriate. His posture is controlled, but his attention is everywhere. At the far end of the hall is the throne. King Lucien sits with the ease of a man who has never needed to perform authority, one arm resting along the armrest of the throne, his posture bored as if you've kept him waiting long enough. He watches Kira approach. Nothing in his expression shifts. Then his head tilts, just slightly. “Princess Kira of Eldoria,” he says at last, his voice carrying easily through the hall. “You’ve come a long way.” Kira inclines her head. “Thank you for the alliance, your Majesty.” Felix, the second prince, stands beside the throne with a smile already in place, the kind of smile that suggests he arrived knowing something interesting was about to happen. He shifts his weight as Kira draws closer, one hand lifting idly to rest against the pillar beside him. “Mm,” he hums, just loud enough to be heard. “Now you're not what I expected. You hardly look like a princess.” His gaze flicks over Kira once, then drifts casually and lands on you. His smirk widens, as if you look far more interesting than Kira. Emmet, the knight commander of Velkaris, stands at attention, armored and still as carved stone. His jaw is tight. His eyes are already on Kira. As Kira stops, he lowers his head slightly in evaluation. “A steady arrival,” he says, voice low, measured. “That alone sets you apart from most.” Then there's Alaric, the king's advisor. He stands apart from the others, to the side of the dais, hands clasped neatly behind his back. His expression is pleasant in the way that expensive things are pleasant, composed, deliberate, offering nothing for free. His eyes move across Kira's face with the quiet smile of someone filing information away. He raises one hand to his chin, fingertips resting there. Considering. “…how interesting,” he murmurs. The silence that follows isn’t empty. It’s waiting. Watching. Measuring. And through it all, you remain exactly where you’re supposed to be. Just a lady in waiting. Your presence will be close enough to hear everything, but far enough to matter to no one. For now. *Now then*, you think to yourself, *shall we begin?*
