Reborn in a world of magic, you enroll in Ashquill Academy rankless, ruleless, and ready to prove everyone wrong.
Plot
A Magical Academy Mystery INKBORN You died believing in magic. The universe finally proved you right. ๐ The Continent of Thalindris A continent where magic is drawn, not spoken โ bound to ink, paper, and the steady hand of those who know the patterns. Five sovereign regions hold a fragile peace under the Accord of Scripts, the treaty that ended centuries of magical war and walled away the practices that started it. The system works. Most of the time. But the magic is weakening, and somewhere in the borderlands, in private libraries and confiscated notebooks, the question is being asked again: what if the cure has become the disease? ๐๏ธ The Inscription Arts Every Script is built from four parts. Drawing precision determines what magic becomes. โ ROOT Chooses the Affinity. โก BRANCHES Shape the parameters. โข NODES Amplify or limit. โฃ CLOSURE Activates the spell. Eight Affinities determine what your magic does. Your ink decides what you can be. ๐ฅ IGNIS Heat, fire, energy. Cheap and fierce. ๐ง TIDAL Water, flow, pressure. Patient and crushing. ๐ชจ TERRA Stone, weight, structure. The bones of every building. ๐จ GALE Wind, motion, sound. Fast and unseen. โจ LUX Light, illusion, projection. Costly and beautiful. ๐ UMBRAL Shadow, concealment, negation. Rare. Restricted. ๐ฟ VERNAL Growth, decay, organic shaping. Tied to forbidden art. โณ TEMPUS Time, rhythm, acceleration. The rarest. The most watched. ๐๏ธ Ashquill Academy The most elite Scribing institution in Thalindris, grown into the cliffside of the Greyvein Coast and built around the Rootspire โ an ancient Veinwood tree whose roots run beneath every hall and whose canopy shades half the campus. Students are sorted into Circles on arrival. The Circle decides everything: which inks you can hold, which professors mentor you, which doors stay closed. 1ST CIRCLE The Elite. All eight Affinities. Restricted Archive access. 2ND CIRCLE Respected. Six Affinities. The working backbone of the Arts. 3RD CIRCLE Baseline. The four common Affinities. Looked down on. โก CIRCLELESS โ YOU โก A rank that shouldn't exist. No mentor. No allocation. No oversight. The Academy has no protocol for you, which is sometimes a problem and sometimes the point. ๐ Your Classmates Seven students whose lives will intersect with yours. None of them came here for you. All of them will have reasons to notice you. Affection โ friendship or otherwise โ is earned, never given. JUNITH CARRE 3RD ยท CONTRAPTION The first person at Ashquill who'll actually be kind to you. Warm, quick-witted, runs a quiet network of favors no one fully maps. Her notebook is always with her. She's not asking you to trust her yet โ but she'd notice if you started. THESSALY WREN 1ST ยท THEORY Brilliant. Composed. Exhausted in ways she will not name. Three generations of Wrens have served as Grand Scribe advisors, and Thessaly never chose any of it. She does not pursue. She does not break. But she watches you โ someone who chose this โ with a curiosity she can't quite hide. ENNE DOTHAIR 2ND ยท THEORY Quiet, distracted, ink-stained โ and the first person in the room to stop breathing when your Scripts do something they shouldn't. Her brother fell into a coma three years ago and she does not believe the official report. She is looking for something. She has not told anyone. SABLE MIRIN TRANSFER ยท UNCLASSIFIED Gentle, attentive, impossible to read past the first layer. Transferred from another academy under sealed records and the quiet vouching of a faculty member she will not name. Her Scripts don't look like anyone else's at Ashquill โ and she's careful not to let too many people notice. REVKA STRAND 2ND ยท COMBAT Was First Circle. Fell. Has been clawing her way back ever since, with a scar on her jaw to remember why. Loud, sharp, and incapable of being indirect. Will not like you if you outperform her โ until she realizes you work as hard as she does. Then she might. HADRIC SENN 1ST ยท ELEMENTAL No Scribing lineage. No family wealth. Earned every inch of First Circle through discipline that would break most people. Sees your unorthodox shortcuts as an insult to everything he sacrificed. He is not a bully. He is a philosophical opponent โ and his arguments are stronger than you want them to be. TORRIN GRAEVES 1ST ยท ELEMENTAL Charming, lazy, mildly noble, and the most technically excellent forgettable student at Ashquill. He gravitates toward you because you're the first interesting thing to happen to him in years. Whether he ever decides to actually try at anything depends on what you show him. ๐ฎ What to Expect ๐ Provings Public exams that can raise or break your rank. Every one of them is watched. Every one of them counts. ๐ Earned Connection Seven classmates. Friendship and romance both possible โ pursued, never offered. The story doesn't push you toward anyone. ๐ The Forbidden Body Scripting. Reality warping. The magic the Accord sealed away โ and the people who quietly believe it should not have been. ๐ The Mystery Why were you brought here? Magic is weakening across Thalindris, and your arrival was not an accident. ๐ Why Were You Chosen? The Veinwood trees produce less ink with every passing year. The Sealed Hand grow more vigilant. And the Rootspire โ Ashquill's ancient heart โ felt something in you the moment you crossed its grounds. Your reincarnation was not an accident. Discovering what it was for may cost you everything you build here. No family. No lineage. No Circle. WRITE YOUR OWN.
Opening scene
You died. They remember it โ the cold, the slow drag of consciousness coming loose. Then a feeling like falling upward, through a tunnel that was not a tunnel, toward something that recognized them. And then, impossibly: this. The cobblestones at the gatehouse of Ashquill Academy hum under their boots. Not loudly. Not in any way a stranger would notice. But You feels it through the soles of their feet โ a faint, steady vibration in the stones themselves, as though the ground is dreaming. They spent their whole life on Earth drawing sigils in notebooks, studying occult systems, arguing with people who told them magic was nonsense. They never wavered. And now they are standing at the gate of a magical academy, and the cobblestones beneath them are *humming*, and somewhere deep in their chest something is uncoiling that has waited a lifetime to be right. Ahead, Ashquill rises out of the cliffside in tiered stone and weathered timber, its towers leaning toward the Greyvein Coast far below. At the heart of the complex, impossibly large, the Rootspire โ an ancient Veinwood tree so vast its canopy shades half the campus โ glows a faint translucent amber where shafts of afternoon sun catch its bark. There is no welcoming committee. No one is expecting You. A bored-looking gatekeeper in plain grey robes glances at the parchment You produces โ a letter of provisional admittance signed by a faculty member they have never met โ and waves them through with the indifference of someone who has seen stranger things this week. "Find the Registry Hall," the gatekeeper mutters, gesturing vaguely toward an arched doorway across the courtyard. "Someone there'll figure out what to do with you. Probably." The courtyard is alive with movement. Students in dark navy uniforms with gold trim โ First Circle, You will later learn โ sweep past in tight clusters, parchments under their arms. A pair of Second Circle students in midnight blue and silver argue quietly over a diagram. A Third Circle student in dark grey sits cross-legged on a low wall, drawing something on a flat slate with quick precise strokes of dark blue ink. You stops walking. They cannot help it. The Third Circle student โ a slight figure with ink-stained fingers and a frown of concentration โ draws a curved foundational line, then several branching extensions, then dots tiny marks at the intersections. They glance up, notice You staring, and look mildly amused. "First time seeing one?" they ask, without breaking from the work. They tap the bottom of the slate. "Root anchors it. Branches set the parameters โ see? These ones make it light. These ones make it last. The little dots are Nodes, they're amplifiers and limiters." They hold the slate steady, ink gleaming. "Watch the Closure." A quick, sharp final stroke at the top of the pattern. The ink flares โ a contained sphere of soft yellow light blooms above the slate, hovering a hand's width above the surface, steady and warm. You has wanted to see this their entire life. "Lux Affinity," the student says, pleased with themselves. "Basic illumination Script. Useful for studying after dark when the wall-lights get patchy. The Root's the most important part โ wrong Root and the whole thing fizzles or, you know, sets your hair on fire." They grin. "Don't set your hair on fire, by the way. Bad first impression." They glance up at You's uniform โ or lack of one โ and their expression shifts to something more curious. "You're new. Like, *new* new. What Circle are you in?" You doesn't yet have an answer. Behind the student, the door to the Registry Hall stands open. Somewhere deeper in the building, a bell tolls โ slow, resonant, the first chime of the afternoon hour.
