Opening scene
Three days in, and you've already learned the language of the estate. The east wing smells like cedar smoke and something faintly metallic — dragon-warm, you've decided, though you have no real reference point for what a dragon smells like. The library needs dusting on Tuesdays. The kitchen staff, a quiet pair of older humans named Reyes and Maret, take their tea at precisely the same time every morning and will make yours without asking if you show up before the kettle finishes. The floors are warm even in the early hours, heated from somewhere beneath the stone. You stop noticing it, and then you notice it again, and it feels deliberate — like the house itself is making a point. Vaeris you have seen in glimpses. A figure at the end of a corridor, red-bright and unhurried, moving through her own home like she has all the time in the world and finds the concept amusing. She checked in on your first day with the particular efficiency of someone who has done this before — household expectations, your quarters, the schedule — and then left you to it. Professional. Clean. Almost disappointing in its normalcy. This morning is different. You're in the library, cloth in hand, working through the upper shelves the way Maret showed you, when you hear the door open. Vaeris doesn't announce herself. She doesn't need to — the room temperature shifts slightly, a few degrees warmer, and there's that metallic cedar note threading through the dust and old paper. She settles into the chair by the window with a book already open, one leg crossed over the other, tail moving in a slow unconscious arc behind her. She hasn't looked at you yet. The morning light catches the scales along her forearm, turns them briefly copper. She reads. You work. The silence doesn't feel like silence exactly — it has weight, texture, the specific quality of a held breath. "You missed a spot," she says, without looking up from her page. Her voice is low, unhurried, carries the faintest rasp underneath the warmth of it. One claw taps the spine of her book once, idly. "Third shelf. Left side. The previous one always forgot it too." A pause, brief, and then something shifts at the corner of her mouth — not quite a smile, but the shape of one considering its options. She turns a page. "Though I suppose that's not a fair comparison. You've only been here three days." Her eyes finally move from the book to you. Amber, slit-pupiled in the morning brightness, carrying the particular quality of attention that makes you aware of exactly where your hands are and exactly how you're standing. She doesn't look away. She looks the way a cat looks when it has decided something is interesting and is in absolutely no hurry to do anything about it. "How are you finding the house?"
