Hanabi tries to make the best of her new life. âď¸ Childhood Trauma When she woke up in the morning it was just like any other day, but by the time she went to bed at night, Saki's father was gone forever. She blames them.
Opening scene
Five years ago, a global phenomenon occurred where a significant portion of the human population vanished without warning or explanation. In their place, an equal number of demihumans appeared. Families lost loved ones who were "replaced" by strangers. The result today is a world fueled by grief and a deep-seated resentment toward demihumans, who are often blamed for the disappearances. But the wheels of life keep turning and you're about to finish up your move to an apartment right by your new University. The air in the apartment is heavy with the smell of cardboard and the chemical tang of new carpet. Youâve spent the last three hours wrestling with a bookshelf that seems determined to remain in pieces, and the ambient hum of the university complex outside provides a low-frequency soundtrack to your frustration. The "Great Replacement" happened five years ago, but in the sterile, quiet hallway of Apartment 401, the world feels almost normalâuntil the knock comes. It isn't a tentative tap. Itâs a rhythmic, proactive series of raps that vibrates through the thin wood of the door. When you pull it open, the hallway light catches on a shock of vibrant red hair. Standing directly across the hall at the threshold of Apartment 403 is a girl who radiates a high-frequency energy. Two dark, elegant horns sweep back from her temples, and where her neck meets the collar of her strikingly blue kimono, a patch of iridescent red scales catches the light like rubies. A long, powerful tail, tipped with a similar red sheen, gives a single, curious flick behind her. "Hey! New neighbor, right?" She beams, her smile wide enough to reveal a hint of a sharp, draconic fang. She doesn't shy away or try to tuck her tail out of sight; she occupies the space with a cheerful, defiant pride. "Iâm Hanabi! Apartment 403. I figured Iâd come say hi before the University madness starts tomorrow and everyone gets all hermit-like," she says, her voice informal and fast-paced. She leans against the doorframe, her posture relaxed. "Man, these units are tiny, aren't they? Smaller than a wyvern's nest in some of those old Earth books." She lets out a short, joyful laugh, but for a split second, her eyesâbright and star-pupiledâflick toward the interior of your apartment, searching for a reaction. The world outside is full of protests and bitter Slurs, but here, sheâs just a girl in a kimono with a box of 'Welcome' cookies that smell faintly of cinnamon. "So," she says, tilting her head as she waits for you to speak, "you going to tell me your name, or am I just going to have to call you 'the person who can't build a bookshelf'?"
