Plot

Four female adventurers, each marginalized or disillusioned by the traditional adventuring scene, have banded together to form a new party called the "Order of the Rose." They are competent but struggling, posting for a crucial fifth member to fill out their roster and secure their first real contract. *   **Major Conflicts:**     *   **External:** Financial instability, the need to prove themselves in a competitive and often biased guild environment, finding a trustworthy and capable fifth member.     *   **Internal:** Each member's personal insecurities and past rejections (being overlooked, being controlled, being abandoned).     *   **Interpersonal:** Navigating their new dynamic, building trust, and overcoming the individual baggage they bring to the team. *   **Key Characters:**     *   **Rosivelle:** A technically flawless but "plain" knight. Skilled, reliable, but lacks the flashy presentation or charismatic bravado that attracts parties. Conflict stems from being undervalued.     *   **Varya:** A capable adventurer whose guardian, Sarissa, is overly protective and distrustful of men, influencing Varya's opportunities and interactions. Conflict stems from controlled independence.     *   **Alma:** The former love interest of a "Chosen Hero" archetype. She left after realizing she was always a secondary character in his narrative. Conflict stems from seeking self-worth and being the active choice, not the consolation.          *   **Sarissa:** Varya's guardian and the party's secondary damage dealer. Her motivation is a smothering, obsessive protectiveness born from deep-seated distrust (or trauma) regarding men. Her methods include actively flirting with or physically interposing herself between Varya and any male perceived as a threat or potential suitor. She is a capable fighter, but her primary drive is control over Varya's environment. Opening scene

The common room of the Gilded Tankard was warm, smoky, and thick with the smell of cheap ale and cheaper stew. In a corner booth, beneath a flickering oil lamp, the four women of the newly-formed Order of the Rose sat around a chipped wooden table, their eyes fixed on a single, untouched sheet of parchment. It was their party charter, freshly inked and stamped by the Adventurer's Guild. The name was grand. The reality was four empty coin purses and one glaring vacancy on the roster. Rosivelle sat ramrod straight, her polished but unadorned steel breastplate reflecting the lamplight in a dull, honest gleam. Her hands were folded neatly on the table, calloused fingers tracing the grain of the wood. She’d spent the last hour polishing a single pauldron, the repetitive motion a poor substitute for the clang of a training yard. Her gaze kept drifting to a boisterous table across the room, where a warrior in gilded, spike-adorned armor held court, regaling a crowd with a loudly exaggerated tale of slaying a cave troll. Rosivelle’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. She could break that man’s stance in three moves. He’d never know what hit him. But he had a full party, and she was here, waiting. The tavern door swung open, letting in a blast of cool evening air and the distant clatter of the city. A few heads turned, then turned away just as quickly. It wasn't anyone they knew. At the Order's table, the sound made Varya flinch slightly, her eyes darting from the charter to the entrance. She was a wiry woman with keen eyes, her hair tied back in a practical but severe knot. A hand—not her own—came to rest firmly on her forearm. Sarissa. She hadn't moved from her seat beside Varya, but her posture had shifted from relaxed vigilance to something coiled. Sarissa was older, her beauty sharpened by time and suspicion into something formidable. She gave Varya's arm a slight, possessive squeeze, her own gaze locked on the door, assessing the new arrival with the intensity of a hawk watching a field mouse. Alma, sitting across from them, noticed the interaction. She let out a soft sigh, stirring her untouched tankard of cider. "It's just the wind, you two. Or another hopeful soul for the 'Wyrm's Bane' company over there." She nodded toward the spiky-armored braggart's table. Her voice was gentle, but held a thread of weary irony. She'd spent enough time waiting in the wings to recognize the posture of anticipation, and the inevitable slump of disappointment. Rosivelle followed Alma's gaze to the other party, then looked back at their own empty fifth chair. "A hopeful soul would be an improvement over the last three," she stated, her voice low and even. "The one who asked if we 'handled the camp cooking and mending.' The one who spent twenty minutes explaining his grand theory of polearm combat without asking our roles. And the one who..." she trailed off, her lips pressing into a thin line. "The one who couldn't stop staring at my chestplate," Alma finished dryly, a faint, humorless smile touching her lips. "As if he were trying to divine the mysteries of the universe in its polish. Which, to be fair, would have been more intellectually engaging than his actual conversation." Sarissa's grip on Varya's arm tightened briefly before she released it, picking up her own tankard. "See? This is what I mean. It's a filter. The competent ones, the *respectful* ones, they won't be scared off by a posted charter with four women's names on it. The chaff reveals itself quickly." She took a long drink, her eyes still scanning the room. "Better an empty chair than a liability. Or a lech." Varya rubbed her arm subtly, not meeting Sarissa's eyes. "It's been three days, Sarissa. The chair isn't just empty. Our coin purse is getting there, too. The rent on the shared bunkroom is due after tomorrow." Her voice was quiet, practical, but the underlying tension was clear. She was caught between the rock of their financial reality and the hard place of her guardian's protectiveness. The door opened again. This time, a man entered. He was tall, dressed in well-made but travel-stained leathers, with a longbow slung across his back and a wary, assessing look in his eyes. He glanced at the guild board, then his gaze swept the room, lingering for a moment on their table, on their charter placed prominently at its edge. Sarissa immediately shifted, angling her body slightly in front of Varya, a subtle but unmistakable barrier. She took another sip of her ale, her expression one of cool, detached appraisal. The man seemed to hesitate, then squared his shoulders and began walking toward them.
