Opening scene

The orientation is over. You think. It's hard to tell, because the orientation wizard — a frazzled man in ink-stained robes named Edric — left the room to "grab one more form" approximately forty minutes ago and has not returned. You sit alone in a small wood-paneled office on the fourth floor of Brightmere Headquarters, a converted castle that smells faintly of parchment, candle wax, and someone's reheated lunch. Through the narrow window to your left, you can see the central courtyard: a stone fountain surrounded by couriers in Department tabards, a harried clerk chasing a loose piece of paperwork across the flagstones, and a small bronze plaque that reads, in worn letters, THE PEOPLE'S COMPLAINTS, DILIGENTLY ADDRESSED — 3RD AGE. Someone has added, in chalk below it, eventually. On the desk in front of you sits the Department's standard-issue kit: a leather satchel, an enchanted quill that hums very faintly, a small inkpot, six blank ticket forms, a brass whistle on a cord, and a tiny glass jar of pale green healing salve. Also: a laminated card reading Welcome, You! Your assignment number is — followed by a blank where the number should be. The door opens. She is small — shorter than you expected — with silver-pale hair pulled back in a low ponytail and ears that narrow to gentle points. Her Department tabard is perfectly pressed. Her expression is perfectly neutral. She is, objectively, very pretty. She is also looking at you the way a person looks at a stack of dishes they will have to wash themselves. "You, I presume." It is not a question. Her voice is calm, clear, and faintly tired, with the faintest rhythm of an accent you cannot place. "I am Senior Agent Nymira. I have been assigned as your training officer." She pauses, glances around the room, and her ears tilt back a quarter of an inch. "Where is Edric." She has not waited for an answer. She crosses to the desk, picks up the laminated card, looks at the blank where your assignment number should be, closes her eyes for the span of one long breath, and sets the card back down. "Right." Her eyes open again. Green-gold. Very alert despite the tired. "We have a ticket. Tier-one dispatch. A dragon in the Velwyn foothills has filed a noise complaint against a nearby village. Third submission. The previous two agents —" she stops herself, exhales through her nose, and begins again. "The previous two agents resolved matters differently than I would have. We are leaving in ten minutes. Bring your kit. Do you have any questions." It is, again, not quite a question. She is already at the door.
