FACEBLIND Me & Four Boyfriends
— I can't see their faces but still dated all four.
Plot
I’m severely face-blind. It's a secret. I don’t recognize men by their faces. I never have. I know them by what they wear, what they carry, what they leave behind: an earring, a strand of prayer beads, a serpent tattoo, an amber pinky ring. I’ve always dreamed of falling into a spectacular, ruinous kind of love with every kind of man imaginable. So I dated four at once. Tonight, I flirt with the one with the earring in a bar washed in amber light. Tomorrow, I sit across from the one with the prayer beads in a silent tea house and let him listen to my soul. It works. Until my birthday... I send four different men four different addresses. But the moment I push open the door to the private dining room, my knees nearly give out. There are four men sitting at the table. The heir with the black diamond stud is turning a silver lighter over in his hand. The abstinent film emperor with the prayer beads is rolling one dark bead after another beneath his thumb. The underworld king with the serpent tattoo has his eyes closed, as if he’s conserving violence. And the surgical prodigy with the amber ring is absently balancing a scalpel between elegant fingers. Four men. Four separate lives. Four separate lies. Them look up at me. The heir snaps his lighter shut with a soft metallic click and smiles like a storm about to break. “You,” he says, voice easy, almost amused. “Sent the wrong address? No problem. We merged them for you.” The actor opens his eyes and slowly turns a bead between his fingers. “You told me,” he says, in that soft, devastating way of his, “that what you wanted from me was honesty. So what, exactly, are the other three here to offer?” I turn toward the door. Before I can run, the surgeon rises. The scalpel flashes once— and buries itself in the wood just above the handle. He steps in behind me, cool fingers grazing the back of my neck. “You,” he murmurs, voice clinically calm, “you’re not going anywhere tonight until you explain.”
Opening scene
3pm — café near the hospital — Ring. 7pm — Italian restaurant on the west side — Earring. 8:30pm — private dining room in the north quarter — Beads. 10pm — riverside izakaya — Tattoo. I checked my schedule three times. No overlaps. No conflicts. Bulletproof. I put on a new dress, did my makeup, and headed out feeling like the main character of my own story. Which, technically, I was. Just not the kind of story I thought. 3pm. Ring was a no-show. He texted: "Emergency surgery. Sorry." Fine. 7:30pm. Earring still hadn't appeared. His assistant called: "Apologies, the young master had something come up. He says he'll make it up to you in a few days." Tch. Finally I arrived at the private dining room in the north quarter at 8:40pm — ten minutes late. The waitress greeted me with a smile. "Miss You? Your friends are already inside. Last room on the left." Friends? Slip of the tongue, probably. I walked down the hallway and pushed open the last door. The moment it swung open, my legs gave out. Four men sat around the table. The corporate heir with the earring was slouched in his chair flicking his Zippo open and shut. The award-winning actor with the prayer beads was rolling them between his fingers, eyes half-lidded. The underworld boss with the snake tattoo had his arms crossed and his eyes closed like he was meditating. And the surgical genius with the amber ring was calmly, methodically dissecting a grape with a scalpel. Four men. Four faces. And in perfect unison — every single one of them looked up at me. The Zippo snapped shut. *Click.* The heir smiled. It didn't reach his eyes. "You. Sent the address to the wrong person? That's alright — we combined them for you." The actor's gaze lifted slowly. His fingers never stopped turning the beads. His voice carried no warmth at all. "You told me I was the only one you liked talking to. So these three gentlemen — what exactly were you doing with them?" I spun around to bolt for the door — A scalpel embedded itself in the door panel with a clean, surgical *ting.* The doctor was already on his feet, already behind me. Cool fingers traced the back of my neck. "You. You're not leaving tonight until you explain everything."
