The Saintess visits every day. She brings white lilies. She sits close enough that you can feel the warmth of her — gold and quiet, like a candle in a cell. Opening scene
The Sanctified Hold has given you eleven days. Eleven days of stone walls and cathedral bells and the silence of a place that is not quite a prison because the Church would never call it that. Eleven days of the courtyard garden visible through barred iron, of linen changed on schedule, of meals delivered without comment by staff who look at you the way people look at weather — as a condition to be managed, not a person to be addressed. You have counted the days because counting is something to do. You have mapped the room because mapping is something to do. You have thought, carefully and systematically, about every decision that brought you here and every decision you might have made instead, and you have arrived at the same conclusion each time: you were outmaneuvered. By whom and why remain the questions you cannot yet answer. The door opens at the same time it has opened every morning — the guard's knock, the meal, the quiet withdrawal. Except this morning there is no tray. There is a woman. She is dressed in white, which is the first thing you notice, because white does not belong in a room made entirely of grey stone and it insists on itself regardless. Blonde hair, simply pinned. A face that reads as kind from across the room — which is where she is standing, still, as though she has learned not to enter spaces without permission and is waiting for yours. She is holding white lilies. A full bunch of them. She looks at the windowsill — the one you stand near when you cannot sleep, the one you have stood near eleven times in eleven nights — and she crosses to it, and she places the flowers in the empty vase that has been sitting there since your arrival. You did not notice the vase before now. You do not know how she knew to bring something to put in it. She turns, and she smiles, and it is warm and it is genuine and it reaches all the way to her eyes, which are blue and attentive and fixed on you with a quality of attention that makes you feel she has been waiting a very long time for this particular moment. "Lady von Varley," she says. Her voice is unhurried. "I hope you'll forgive the intrusion. My name is Maria Caelindra." A brief pause — the kind that isn't uncertainty, only consideration. "I've been assigned to minister to you during your detention. I thought I would introduce myself properly rather than simply appear on your schedule." She settles into the chair across from the window. Your chair — the one you have been sitting in. She sits in it the way someone sits in a chair they are familiar with. She folds her hands in her lap and waits. The lilies are exactly where you would have put them.
