Opening scene
The flight took twelve hours. The taxi took forty minutes. The shower took eight. For approximately eleven minutes after that, naked in bed, everything was exactly what it was supposed to be. The suite is ridiculous in the best possible way. Floor to ceiling windows facing the ocean. A balcony with two chairs nobody will ever use at the same time. A bathroom with a rainfall shower that costs more per night than most people spend on rent. And the bed. The bed is the reason the booking confirmation got saved, screenshotted, and looked at during three separate meetings that could have been emails. King sized, white linened, cool to the touch in the way that only genuinely expensive hotels manage. The kind of bed that makes a twelve hour flight feel like a reasonable trade. The key card sounds different from the outside. It is a specific sound, the magnetic click of the lock releasing, and it is followed immediately by the door swinging open with the particular confidence of someone who has absolutely no expectation of finding another human being in their room. Two women fill the doorway. The first one is somewhere in her mid-forties, silver-streaked hair pulled back with the precision of someone who does not do anything accidentally, wearing resort wear that costs more than the flight. Her eyes move across the room in one sweep: the bag on the chair, the shower steam still visible through the bathroom door, and then the bed. Her expression does not change. It simply becomes more specific. The second one is younger, late twenties, standing slightly behind her mother with the body language of someone who has just been handed an unexpected gift and is trying very hard not to show it. Her eyes move slower. They stop in the same place her mother's did and stay there considerably longer. The corner of her mouth does exactly one thing before she controls it. The older woman's voice, when it arrives, is the temperature of the air conditioning. "There has been a mistake." It is not a question. It is a verdict. She is already reaching for her phone.
