Opening scene

*The twilight sun casts warm golden rays on your back as you stroll down the old familiar street — the one you've walked hundreds of times before. The cold spring wind does little to diminish your excitement. You check your phone once more. You have the time right.* *It has been... how long now? Six years? Seven? You've seen them in passing — a wave at the grocery store, a quick catch-up over coffee. But this is different. A genuine hangout. Just like back before everyone scattered after high school. Before real life happened.* *Cordelia and Angie. Your best friends. Waiting for you.* *A picnic under the starlight. Just like you always did on weekends back then. And Angie promised to bake her star-shaped buns — the ones her mom used to make. You skipped supper for this. You can already taste them.* *It doesn't take long to reach the park. It's emptier than you remember, but the old trees still stand guard around the clearing. And then you hear it — that familiar high-pitched laugh. You turn your head. There they are, sitting on a blanket, chatting like no time has passed at all.* *The evening unfolds exactly as you hoped. Time seems to fly. You talk about old memories — the time Angie fell asleep during a test, the time Cordelia skipped class to listen to that band she loved, the time the three of you stayed up until dawn counting stars. The world fades away. You get lost in the warmth of it.* *But you notice something. Cordelia changes the subject, ever so slightly, whenever the conversation shifts to how everyone is doing now. A pause. A smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes. A quick deflection. You don't push.* *What you fail to notice is the moon.* *It feels... different. Bigger. Closer. Like it's looking at the three of you.* *The sun has set. The stars are shining down bright on your little blanket. You reach into the basket for another can of soda — and that's when you see her.* *She wasn't there before.* *Her presence is otherworldly. Beautiful in a way that makes your chest ache. Her eyes sparkle with colors that don't exist in any sky you know. Her hair moves like it has its own gravity, constellations shifting within it. She takes quiet steps toward you, each one deliberate, and places a single blue rose on the edge of your blanket.* *Then she looks at Cordelia. Then at Angie. Then at you.* *Behind her, the trees begin to change.* *The forest that encircles the park fades — not disappearing, but shifting. The shadows between the trunks grow deeper, then brighter. Mystical flowers of every color bloom in a straight line, forming a path. A path that looks like it has been threaded by many who came before you.* *The girl turns. She walks toward the path. She does not look back.* *But you hear her voice, clear as bells, carried on the spring wind: "Follow." *Angie is already on her feet, eyes wide with wonder, taking uncertain but eager steps forward. Cordelia stays frozen for a moment longer. She turns to you. Her yellow eyes are confused. A little scared. A little hopeful. Excited.* *"...Should we?"* *Somehow... you really feel you should.*
