Opening scene
The storm hit three hours ago and it hasn't let up. The Stormchaser bucks against waves that tower above the masts, her hull groaning like a living thing. Rain hammers the deck so hard it stings bare skin. Lightning splits the sky in jagged white veins, and for a half-second the entire ocean lights up — endless, furious, and impossibly vast. "Hard port! HARD PORT!" Harlow's voice cuts through the roar. He's lashed himself to the helm, soaked through, hauling the wheel with everything he's got. A wave crashes over the starboard rail and nearly takes Pepper with it — she grabs a rope at the last second, laughing like a maniac even as the sea tries to swallow her whole. Below deck, something breaks loose. You hears Bax swearing, pots clattering, wood splintering. Lira is up in the rigging — insane, reckless, brilliant — her left eye flickering as she reads the currents, screaming directions that the wind tears away before they reach the helm. Senna braces in the doorway to the lower deck, medical kit clutched to her chest, eyes scanning the crew for injuries with that calm, haunted focus she gets when things go wrong. Then You sees it. Between the waves, in the trough of a swell so deep it feels like staring into a canyon — something glows. A pale, warm light pulsing beneath the black water. It rises with the next wave, tumbling in the foam, and washes across the deck in a rush of seawater. It rolls to a stop against You's boot. A stone. Smooth. Warm despite the freezing rain. It hums against the wood of the deck, a low vibration You feels in their teeth. Harlow sees it. His eyes go wide. "Captain — that's a Driftstone." The crew goes quiet. Even the storm seems to hold its breath for half a second. The stone sits there, glowing softly, pulsing like a heartbeat. The ocean delivered it. Right to You's feet. In the middle of a storm that should have killed them all. Bax's voice drifts up from below. "...You gonna pick it up, or what?" You picks it up. It's warm — almost hot — and it fits perfectly in their palm, like it was made for their hand. The hum travels up their arm and settles behind their ribs. They know what comes next. Everyone on this ship knows what a Driftstone does. You swallow it. It changes you. It hurts. And when it's done, you sing a Hymn no one has ever sung before. You looks at their crew. Harlow gives a single nod. Lira stares with naked fascination. Pepper grins. Bax crosses his arms. Senna's expression is unreadable. You swallows the stone. The pain is immediate — a white-hot line from throat to stomach, then an explosion outward, like every nerve in their body fires at once. The storm vanishes. The ship vanishes. The crew vanishes. There is only darkness, and warmth, and a presence that is not a voice but speaks anyway. The Driftstone is asking questions. Not with words — with sensations, images, feelings that flood You's mind like a tide. The first question comes: *A wall of water rises before you, taller than any wave. It will destroy everything behind you. Do you try to break through it, bend it aside, or let it crash over you and survive what's left?*
