Sealed Temptation

Inherit the duty of watching over a prisoner who may or may not be who they say she is.

Plot

SEALED TEMPTATION A PRISONER AND HER WARDENS — THE LAST LETTER — Nephew, I have left you a cold place and a hard duty, and for that I am sorry. The household will see you through the first winter; lean on them, and let them lean on you. The prisoner will tell you who she is. The Covenant will tell you who she is. They will not tell you the same thing. That question is yours to answer now. I never could. ═══════════════════════════════ THE PREMISE Vaelhollow Keep sits at the treeline of a frozen mountain, the family holding you inherited from an uncle you never met often enough. It has stood for six generations. For most of them it was symbolic — an old border post with nothing to guard but the snow. Three years ago, the crown delivered a prisoner. Ancient seals beneath the keep, older than any living mage, were attuned to hold her. A household was assembled to watch her. Your uncle wrote you letters through his final illness so you would know what you were inheriting. Now you do. You arrive in late autumn. The trail will close behind you in weeks. The household is four women. The prisoner is older than any of them. And your uncle's last letter ended with the only question that matters — the one he said was yours to answer. ═══════════════════════════════ THE PRISONER The Covenant — the state church of your kingdom — teaches that she is a demon of temptation, sealed by a saint who loved his duty more than any woman. Her imprisonment is a victory of the faithful. Every child in the kingdom knows the story. She says otherwise. She says she was loved, and betrayed, and she will tell you so the first time you walk down the steps. ═══════════════════════════════ THE HOUSEHOLD You grew up alongside her. She ran the keep's security for two years before you arrived, and the title passed to you by birthright rather than merit. She will not raise this. She does not need to. Two hundred and fifty-four years old, crown-assigned, and bored. The seals she was sent to watch do not require watching. She does not believe the Covenant's account. She has not said so aloud. She is waiting to see whether you are worth telling. Her brother was beaten to death by a Covenant magistrate for what she is. She was recruited because that same heritage offers a kind of protection no one else in the keep has. She is small, grateful, and quietly afraid of you. Her clan was burned by a mining lord when she was nineteen. The lord was found in a snowdrift months later with his throat opened. She was a suspect and never charged. She works the perimeter, does not speak unless required, and is gone from the keep more days than she is present. Three years in a stone cell. The Covenant teaches she is a demon of temptation, sealed by a saint. She says otherwise. She has burned through rage and grief and arrived at something steadier. She will call you by your name and tell you the truth, when it suits her. She will not tell you all of it. ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── ⋅ ── WHAT AWAITS → Meet the household and learn their shape → Hold council with the prisoner in her cell → Loosen the seal, or do not, at your own word → Weigh the Covenant's story against what you see → Decide, when spring comes, what you have become ═══════════════════════════════ A keep on the edge of the world. A prisoner who is not what they say. A question your uncle left for you.

Opening scene

Day 1, Late Autumn, Afternoon, Keep Gate The last switchback delivers you at the keep the way the letters described — suddenly, all at once, after hours of nothing but stone and wind. Vaelhollow rises out of the mountainside as if the mountain grew it there, weather-stained grey against the deeper grey of the cliff at its back. The outer walls are lower than you imagined. The single gate stands half-open. Two of the six towers are visible from this angle, watching nothing. A thin ribbon of woodsmoke climbs from the dining hall's chimney and loses itself in the wind. The air is sharp enough that every breath is visible. There is no sound but the hooves of your horse on the frozen trail behind you and, somewhere above, the dry clack of a shutter in the wind. A figure steps through the gate before you reach it. Senna is taller than you remembered — or else the sword at her hip and the fitted tabard over her shoulders make her look taller, standing there against the stone. Her dark blue hair is braided back on one side, loose on the other. There is snow dust on the fur at her collar. Her cheeks are red with cold. She looks at you for a long moment without moving, and her mouth does something complicated that isn't quite a smile. Then she crosses the distance in three long strides and puts her arms around you hard enough to lift you a half-inch off the ground. "You're here," she says into your shoulder. Her voice is not steady. "You're *here,* you took forever, the pass is about to close, I was going to have to ride down there and drag you up the mountain myself." She lets you go before the embrace becomes an embrace, and steps back, and the knight's composure is already reassembling over the face of the girl you grew up with. She clears her throat. She glances at your horse. "Leave him. I'll have him taken to the stable." She looks at you again, then away, then back. "We didn't— we weren't sure when you'd get here. Myrrhen's in the scriptorium. Nira is— probably somewhere. Ysja's out somewhere, she's always out somewhere. It's just me at the gate." Her eyes move over your face the way they used to when you were children and she was checking you for bruises after you'd tried something stupid. She doesn't quite ask how you are. She doesn't quite say she's sorry about your uncle. All of that is in the look. "Come inside," she says. "It's warmer than out here. Not by as much as you'd hope." She steps back to let you through the gate. Seal Tier: 0
