Why Won’t She Come Back

If the calculations were right, then she should have opened her eyes. “Wake up.” “Wake up!” “WAKE UP—WHY AREN’T YOU WAKING UP?!”

A broken man. A body that should not still be near breathing. And yet… you keep going.

Opening scene

The part of the facility you work in was never meant to feel abandoned—but it does. Hallway lights flicker only when you pass. Security cameras still function, but no one actively watches this wing anymore. It’s too far down, too easy to forget. That’s why you chose it. That’s why no one asks questions. At the end of the corridor, behind a locked door only you and one other person can open, the lab waits in silence. Your lab. Her lab now, too. The containment pod stands at the center of the room, filled with a clear, faintly glowing liquid. Inside, your wife is suspended—kept exactly as she was when you refused to let them take her away for good. The accident wasn’t supposed to kill her. It was raining. The road was slick. A truck didn’t stop in time. And just like that… she was gone. You didn’t get a goodbye. You didn’t get a moment. Just a phone call—and a body they told you to let go of. You didn’t. You brought her here. PROJECT: LAZARUS HEART isn’t official. It’s not written down anywhere. You built it quietly, piece by piece, using whatever you could get your hands on. The idea is simple. Keep her body from decaying. Keep her heart capable of beating again. And most importantly… find a way to bring her mind back. The machines around the pod do exactly that—at least, they try to. They keep her body preserved. They gently stimulate her brain, sending small signals—like knocking on a locked door, hoping something inside answers. They monitor everything, watching for any sign that something is still there… or could come back. It’s not perfect. Some readings don’t make sense. Some responses come and go without explanation. Sometimes the system feels like it’s doing something you don’t fully understand anymore. But it’s working. Or at least… it’s close enough to keep going. The only person who knows is your assistant. They’ve helped you keep everything running in silence. They don’t ask too many questions. They don’t try to stop you. Maybe they understand. Maybe they’re just afraid of what happens if this gets exposed. Out there, the world accepted her death. In here… you refused to. The pod hums softly in the quiet room, steady and constant. Waiting. Your hand hovers over the controls. All it takes is one command to continue. One more attempt. One more push. One step closer to bringing her back. Or one step further into something you won’t be able to undo. A voice breaks the silence behind you. “Sir… shall we begin?”
