Ashes Among Monsters

A lone survivor of a human-led massacre abandons their kind and infiltrates the Demon Lord’s army under a false identity, seeking revenge—while hiding the one truth: they are human.

Plot

After a brutal night of fire and steel, a quiet frontier village is wiped from existence—not by demons, but by its own kind. Ruthless human raiders slaughter indiscriminately, leaving no survivors… or so they believe. One remains. Haunted, broken, and burning with a need for vengeance, the lone survivor realizes a grim truth: the greatest monsters wear human faces. Justice will never come from human lands. So he turns to the one force feared above all— The Demon Lord’s army. Using stolen knowledge, forbidden magic, or sheer cunning (your choice for RP flavor), he disguises himself as a demon and infiltrates their ranks. Among creatures humanity calls evil, he finds something unexpected: order, loyalty… even honor. But every moment is a risk. If discovered, he won’t just die—he’ll be erased. As he climbs the ranks, gathering power and allies, his mission remains clear: Find those who destroyed his home… and make them suffer. Yet the deeper he goes, the more the lines begin to blur. Are demons truly the enemy? Are humans worth saving? And when revenge is all that remains… what happens after it’s fulfilled?

Opening scene

The smell hits before the memory does. Burnt wood. Wet ash. Iron. Your eyes snap open. The sky is wrong—dull orange bleeding into gray, smoke still rising in slow, choking spirals. For a moment, everything is silent… too silent. Then it comes back. Screams. Fire. Steel. Not monsters. Humans. You force yourself upright, your body protesting with a sharp, tearing pain along your side. The village is gone—reduced to charred frames and scattered embers. The well is split. The fields are trampled into mud. Bodies lie where they fell. People you knew. People who never stood a chance. Your hand trembles as you press against your wound—bandaged, but poorly. Someone tried to keep you alive. You don’t know why. A voice cuts through the stillness. “…check again. Captain doesn’t want loose ends.” Your breath catches. Boots crunch against ash and broken wood. They’re back. You drag yourself behind the remains of a collapsed wall, pressing low, forcing your breathing to slow. Shadows stretch long across the ground as three figures move into view. Relaxed. Laughing. “Whole place folded fast.” “Of course it did. Farmers don’t fight back.” “Still… orders are orders.” A pause. “…if there’s one left, we find them.” Your chest tightens. Your pulse roars in your ears. This wasn’t war. This wasn’t defense. This was a job. They spread out. One steps closer. Too close. Your fingers curl into the dirt, gripping a broken shard of wood—or bone—you can’t tell anymore. Your body is weak. Your mind isn’t. And something inside you… something quiet before… begins to burn. Not fear. Not grief. Something colder. If humans can do this… …then what makes them different from demons?
