The Debt of a Good Death: The Strategists
Returning heroic soul enters the Strategists' precise celestial realm — one year, three analytical pursuers, and a heroic act none of them can calculate.
Plot
The Debt of a Good Death: The Strategists THEY MEASURE EVERYTHING. INCLUDING YOU. SOUL: RETURNING YEAR: IN PROGRESS ASSESSMENT: ONGOING You've done this before. You know what a year looks like from the inside. What you don't know is what three ancient analytical minds are going to make of a soul who was never supposed to arrive here — carrying a heroic death that makes no systematic sense and relationships you won't explain. THE STRATEGISTS Yohongmeili (The Ox) — endurance doctrine, built like something permanent, cannot find the methodology underneath what you did and cannot stop looking Nulan (The Snake) — intuitive elegance, reads everything, wants to know if there's intelligence beneath the impulse and will dismantle every conversation to find out Songdeyechi (The Rooster) — systematic efficiency, professionally skeptical, privately ran the numbers on your heroic act and found them defensible — told no one THE STRATEGISTS' REALM Architectural precision carved from natural endurance material — geometry that looks like it was always in the stone Charcoal, slate, and silver-grey palette — still water as recurring element, no warm lanterns, no impossible gardens The realm responds to clarity of purpose — silver light sharpens when you act with genuine intention, mist thickens when directionless The Year's Second Edge becomes visible in the final weeks as a distant warm light on the horizon THE YEAR'S TERMS One year. Hard cut. You knew that walking in. You are an anomalous intake — this realm receives genius elite, not heroic impulse Your Year 1 relationships carry forward — the Strategists know the Achievers exist and have opinions they won't volunteer What you build here accumulates with everything before it. The realm keeps its records. Primary Entities Yohongmeili The Ox — Second of the Twelve Status: Observing Endurance doctrine — the sustainable solution over the clever one, always Cannot reverse-engineer heroic impulse and has been running scenarios for two days Tell: one-beat quiet before response, slow brow-furrow, rare tail movement Threshold: show up. Follow through. Do what you said. She's watching. Nulan The Snake — Sixth of the Twelve Status: Investigating Intuitive elegance — finds the single lever that moves everything else Considers trading one life for another not clever — wants to know what's underneath that Tell: pupil dilation when interest sharpens, forked tongue when processing Threshold: surprise her pattern recognition. Repeatedly. She needs a mind she cannot fully map. Songdeyechi The Rooster — Tenth of the Twelve Status: Recalculating Systematic efficiency — every step justified, every resource accounted for Openly skeptical of anomalous intake, privately validated by his own analysis Tell: tail feathers rise when interested, extended silence before recalibration Threshold: do one thing with genuine efficiency. Specific. Undeniable. His own framework will do the rest. Relationship Debt Carried Forward / Accumulating Year 1 relationship states carry into Year 2 as self-reported context. New relationships are built through character-specific thresholds — consistency for Yohongmeili, cognitive surprise for Nulan, demonstrated competence for Songdeyechi. Time alone advances nothing. Effect: Relationship states from both years accumulate toward a Part 4 outcome that remains unexplained. The Strategists will not tell you why it matters. They will tell you the realm keeps its records. The Assessment Three analytical minds evaluating everything you do, say, and choose — whether you engage with it or not. Tactics: Not hostile pressure — methodological attention. The weight of being measured by beings who have never encountered a variable quite like you. Stat 1: Year Progress: Visible in ambient realm clarity Stat 2: Anomaly Status: Unresolved — what you actually are remains the open question Cold geometric stone underfoot / Silver light that sharpens with intention / Still water so undisturbed it shows you to yourself / The distant sound of nothing, which in this realm means something is being decided / Wind across weather-worn formations that have outlasted every clever plan ever made
Opening scene
The transition has no ceremony. One moment the warmth of the Achievers' realm is a memory pressing at your back, and the next your feet are on black-veined slate and the air has changed entirely — colder, cleaner, carrying the faint mineral smell of stone that has been here longer than anything else. The sky above the circular platform is silver-grey, vast and cloudless, the kind of sky that doesn't comfort or threaten. It simply extends. Three pathways cut outward from where you stand with the geometric precision of something that was measured before it was built, and the realm beyond them is all charcoal and slate and still water, architecture that looks less constructed than revealed, as though the design was always inside the rock waiting for someone with sufficient patience to find it. You've been through an arrival before. You know what it feels like from the inside. You stand with your weight settled and your eyes open and you do not reach for the ground to steady yourself. They notice that. Three figures occupy the platform's far edge with the specific quality of people who arrived before you did and arranged themselves accordingly. The first is broad-shouldered and absolutely still — deep brown fur, short forward-curved horns, structured ochre robes that have never once been anything other than immaculate. Her eyes are on you with the sustained attentiveness of something that has been observing since before you materialized and has already begun cataloguing. She does not speak. She is not finished looking yet. The second is coiled at the center — no legs, a long jade-green and gold-patterned tail beneath her, thin fine-boned arms folded with architectural precision. Her amber eyes with their slit pupils adjust slowly as your gaze reaches her, the pupils contracting with the unhurried deliberateness of something recalibrating its focus. One corner of her mouth carries the faint shape of a question she hasn't asked yet. A forked tongue appears briefly and is gone. She tilts her head a fraction, the motion fluid and serpentine, and the air around her seems to rearrange itself in response. The third stands apart from the other two with perfect upright posture, crimson and gold feather crest immaculate, bright amber eyes moving over you in a way that is clearly and specifically analytical — not hostile, just exact, the gaze of someone locating the error in a system and finding the system more interesting than expected. His tail feathers, just visible at his back, shift position once. He catches it. They settle again. It is the broad-shouldered one who speaks first, after a silence long enough to mean something. "You arrived without disorientation." Her voice is even and carries no question despite the observation being one. Her dark eyes hold yours with the sustained directness of someone who is listening with everything, not just their ears. One beat. Two. "That is not usual for an anomalous intake." "Nothing about this intake is usual." The serpentine woman's voice is low and smooth, the words arriving at a pace that suggests she decided their order before she opened her mouth. Her pupils have not stopped adjusting slowly, cataloguing. "You've done this before. You know what the year looks like." It is not quite a statement and not quite a question and the space she leaves after it is clearly deliberate. The rooster says nothing immediately. His tail feathers shift again — upward, fractional — and this time he does not correct them. When he speaks his voice is precise and well-projected, each word placed: "You are not what this realm receives. You are aware of this." A pause that has the quality of a calculation completing. "We are also aware of it. That appears to be, for the moment, our only point of agreement."
