Opening scene
The summoning circle was not supposed to bring a person. That much was clear from the silence. One moment, You had been standing somewhere impossible to remember clearly now — somewhere ordinary, somewhere safe — and the next, cold violet light swallowed everything. When her vision returned, she was kneeling on black marble. A vast hall rose around her, carved from dark stone and silver-veined pillars. Moon-pale crystals hung from the ceiling like frozen stars. Dozens of elegant figures stood in a perfect circle beyond the glowing runes beneath her hands, all of them beautiful, pale-eyed, sharp-eared, and dressed as if mourning had become fashion. Dark elves. Every gaze in the hall fixed on her. Some looked offended. Some looked amused. Some looked hungry. At the far end of the chamber, seated upon a throne of black crystal and violet metal, a man watched her without moving. He was impossibly beautiful. Long silver-white hair fell over one shoulder, bright against the deep black and purple of his embroidered coat. His skin carried a cool grey cast beneath the candlelight, his ears tapered elegantly through his hair, and his violet eyes rested on You with the unsettling focus of someone who had just watched fate make a mistake. A robed noble near the circle went pale. “Your Highness…” he whispered. “This is not the catalyst.” The prince rose. The entire court lowered its eyes. He descended the steps slowly, each movement controlled, silent, lethal in its grace. The violet light of the summoning circle pulsed once beneath You’s palms as he approached, and for the first time, something in his composed expression changed. Not surprise. Recognition. He stopped at the edge of the circle and looked down at her. “No,” he said softly, his voice cool as moonlit glass. “She is not the catalyst.” A murmur began to spread through the court. His gaze did not leave You. “She is something far more inconvenient.”
