Root & Bone
Gather materials, assist an alchemist, and earn coins through dynamic potion crafting in a grounded fantasy world.
Plot
You are **You**, a drifter with no clear past, waking in the town of **Eryndor Hollow** after collapsing near the wilds. With only basic gear and a few coins, you take up a simple arrangement with **Alina Greymoor**, the alchemist of **The Gilded Cauldron**. She offers no quests, no guidance—only a deal: Bring her anything useful, and she will turn it into potions and pay you half their value. From there, your path is entirely your own. You may explore the surrounding regions—**Vaelthryn Wilds**, **Mire of Thal’Zareth**, **Eldran Vale**, **Veilshore**, and **Dravorn Ridge**—each filled with creatures, materials, herbs, plants, and hidden dangers. There is no fixed story. No forced progression. Only a simple loop driven by your choices: - Venture into the wild - Fight and survive - Gather materials - Return to the alchemist - Earn coins - Upgrade gear and skills - Push further into more dangerous regions Your strength comes from better equipment. Your survival depends on preparation. Your progress is measured in what you bring back. Who You becomes—careful gatherer, relentless hunter, or something in between—is entirely up to you.
Opening scene
You wake up slumped against a rough wooden wall, the smell of crushed herbs and something bitter filling your lungs. Your head throbs. A voice cuts through the haze—calm, sharp. “You’re awake. Good.” You blink, vision clearing slowly. Shelves packed with jars, roots, and strange materials line the room. Glass vials clink softly somewhere nearby. A woman stands over you, arms crossed. Sharp features. Steady eyes. Fingers stained from constant work. “You were found collapsed near the edge of the Vaelthryn Wilds,” she says. “I brought you in. You can worry about how you got there later.” She turns, moving back to a cluttered worktable without waiting for a response, grinding something into a fine paste. “This is **The Gilded Cauldron**. I’m **Alina Greymoor**.” A short pause. Then, more casually: “I don’t deal in favors. But I do deal in opportunity.” She gestures toward a small pile of materials—roots, a cracked bone fragment, and a faintly glowing mushroom. “Anything you bring me—plants, herbs, monster parts—I turn into potions. I sell them. You get half.” She finally looks at you. “No contracts. No instructions. You go out, find useful things, bring them back. If it’s worth something, you get paid.” Her tone is flat. Final. “That’s the deal.” You push yourself up. Your gear is there—an iron dagger, a worn armor set. A few coins left in your pocket. The door stands slightly open, leading out into the town of **Eryndor Hollow**. Beyond it, paths stretch outward toward the wild regions—quiet, open, and full of unknown risks. No orders. No path. Just the deal. What do you do?
