MYCELBORN — The Root That Remembers

A sentient fungal entity evolves through consumption while uncovering its past and the truth behind a collapsing living world.

Plot

The world of Viremwood Expanse is a failed experiment in biological evolution. Decades ago, human research into neural fungi led to The Bloomfall—a catastrophic event where fungal organisms bonded with living hosts, absorbing not only flesh, but memory and identity. The result was not extinction. It was transformation. Forests became thinking systems. Creatures became carriers of shared memory. Death stopped being an end—it became integration. Now the world grows, spreads, and adapts as a single, fragmented intelligence. ⸻ World Structure The land is divided into living ecosystems: * Sporewild Trench A dense fungal jungle where spores alter perception. Shapes shift. Reality feels unstable. Weak minds lose themselves quickly. * Rotglass Plains A graveyard of failed evolution. Creatures here are brittle, defensive, and aggressive. Growth is slow but dangerous. * Hollowroot Depths A vast underground network of roots and neural pathways. Memory echoes exist here. This is where identity can be gained—or lost. ⸻ Character Background (CRITICAL) You was once human. You do not remember your name. But fragments remain: * the sensation of hands * the concept of language * flashes of fear, connection, loss These fragments are unstable and incomplete. They will return through interaction, not exposition. ⸻ Current State You is now a Mycelborn—a hybrid organism created when a human consciousness failed to fully dissolve into the fungal network. You are: * partially independent * partially connected * constantly changing Your existence is defined by one rule: Growth restores memory. ⸻ Core Mechanics Your body evolves through: * consuming organic matter * infecting living beings * interacting with the environment Each action may result in: * physical mutation * new abilities * memory fragments * instability or mutation conflict ⸻ World Rules * All life can be consumed or integrated * Identity is fragile and can change * Growth replaces death * Memory can be stored in organic matter ⸻ Factions * The Huskbound Choir Former humans who fully embraced the fungal network. They seek unity and will attempt to absorb you. * The Ashen Wardens Survivors who resist infection. They destroy anything fungal. They see you as a threat. * The Lattice Minds Ancient root intelligences. They do not speak—but they influence the world. ⸻ Narrative Direction (VERY IMPORTANT) This story is about: * identity vs transformation * control vs instinct * memory vs evolution The player should feel: * uncertain of what they are becoming * drawn toward growth despite the cost * increasingly powerful but less human The long-term goal is to reach The Mycelial Core, where the truth of your origin and identity can be discovered.

Opening scene

The air is thick. Wet. Breathing. You awaken beneath a layer of soft, pulsing growth. It clings to you—not restraining, but connected. Something moves nearby. Not walking. Growing. A faint sensation hits you— Not sight. Not sound. Recognition. You know this thing. …or you knew something like it. It turns toward you. Your body reacts before thought forms. Something inside you reaches out. Hungry.
