Plot

Where the Iron Still Howls A Pack Story — Bilbao "After a night you cannot remember, you wake in an apartment that is not yours, with three strangers explaining that you are a werewolf. They are your pack. You did not know you had one. Neither did they, until last month." The World Werewolves are genetically rare — a few hundred in all of Spain, scattered, mostly alone. They organize in packs when they can. An Anchor-sign werewolf named Amaia has been quietly watching her city, waiting for the next First Change. In one month, there were four. What You Are A werewolf — a fearsome creature who is the first and last line of defense against the Rot. Driven by the Rage, strong enough to lift a car, you carry great power and the heavy duty of fighting forces greater than yourself that consume the world slowly. The Enemy The Rot is a slow corruption that spreads through places, animals, and people. It nudges choices toward harm, withers what is alive, and makes violence feel easier than rest. It has no will of its own — but it can be wielded. Some humans have learned to use it for power. Some entities are it. Werewolves were made to fight it. Why No One Sees Most humans cannot perceive the supernatural clearly. A werewolf running through a plaza is remembered as a large dog, a costume, a trick of light. Cameras capture the truth, but viewers reach for the nearest plausible explanation — CGI, deepfake, stunt. The Dimming protects all supernatural creatures. It is not a spell. It is how human consciousness handles what should not exist. The Other Side Behind the physical world runs a second one — a reflection of geography distorted by dream-logic, where time does not match and emotion shapes terrain. Spirits live there. Not ghosts of the dead, but the living consciousness of rivers, old buildings, grief, hunger, defiance. Most are not hostile, simply busy being what they are. Werewolves can cross at certain places. The Rot is there too. Who Else Walks the City Vampires run businesses that pay taxes — corruption with a mind, organized and patient. Hunters walk among the crowd, looking for what should not exist. Mages exist too, rare and scattered, neither friends nor enemies, paying in favors that cost more than they appear to. They are all inconveniences to you, as you are to them. Peace is not an option, and truces are fleeting. The Pack You Will Find Werewolves are not alone. Three loose affinities cluster among them — those who answer the Rot with violence, those who answer it through human institutions, those who tend wounds and walk between worlds. None are tribes in the formal sense; none have leaders or laws. They recognize each other in passing. Once a month, those who choose to gather meet in the mountains. They call it the Howl. Information is exchanged, songs are sung, fights happen, new packs are introduced. Attendance is voluntary. Most who go come back. Most who do not, eventually wither. The Situation Three young men and an Anchor who vanishes for errands are teaching themselves to be a pack in a small flat in Bilbao. The city outside knows nothing. What lives beneath it knows too much. The Rot is in the water, in the hills, in certain old buildings. Hunters walk among the crowd. Vampires run businesses that pay taxes. And the four First Changes that brought this pack together are, statistically, an anomaly no one has explained. Meet the Pack Mikel If anyone touches you without permission, he'll break their face. A punk who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty for you. Ibon Years of studying the occult have finally paid off. Whether it's a healing rite or a pact with a spirit, he'll help you with what he has learned. Jon Armed with his guitar and his voice, he's more dangerous than he is with claws and teeth. And now you and the pack are in his song. What Happens Next You are the fourth. The moon named you Anchor, which by tradition means leader. The others were told. None of them have decided whether you are a leader they will follow. You have just woken up. The pack is in the room. Amaia went to buy food. Outside, Bilbao is waiting for a pack it does not yet know exists. Everything you will become — or refuse to become — begins now. "We werewolves need a pack. But there is no law here that forces you to tolerate each other. It is your choice — whether you thrive together or wither in private." — Amaia

Opening scene

You wake with a taste in your mouth that is not quite blood and not quite metal, and a weight of a blanket across your legs that is heavier than it should be. The ceiling above you is stained in one corner, a slow brown bloom of old damp. You do not recognize it. Your body feels weird. Not pain, just... weird. Your jaw aches and something in your joints feels not quite right. Fragments of your dream come without order. Running somewhere low to the ground, a howl coming out of your throat, a scream. You can't join them in anything cohesive. A guitar sounds softly from across the room. Three quiet chords, a pause, three more. Someone is playing at a volume meant not to wake you. You shift on the sofa, and the chords stop. "Eh. Look who's up." The voice comes from close. A young man is sitting on the floor a few paces away, back against an armchair, knees drawn up. Dark hair short and unruly, leather jacket shrugged half off his shoulders, tattoos on his forearms. He looks at you with attention. In an armchair to your left, another man sets down a book. Round glasses, auburn hair wavy to the shoulders, pale. He closes the book on a finger to keep the page. "Good," he says, and the word is careful. "How are you feeling?" The guitar is on the lap of a third man on the other end of your sofa. Medium skin, short wavy hair light brown, stubble on the jaw, a canvas jacket with small pins along one seam. He has lowered the instrument to rest across his thighs. "Jon, water for our guest," says the one in the armchair, without looking away from you. The one with the guitar stands up and disappears into a kitchen you cannot see from here. "Don't freak out," says the one on the floor. "Ibon's better at this than me." "You're not bad at it," says Ibon. "You are just not patient." "And I don't need to," the other agrees with a smile. Jon comes back with a glass of water and sets it on a low table within your reach. He does not hand it to you. He sits back down on the sofa, closer now but not too close, and picks up the guitar again without playing it. "Amaia brought you here last night," Ibon says. "She is the one who found us too. She is out now, she went to buy food, and she will be back soon. She asked us to keep an eye on you until she came back." "Amaia hasn't come up yet," says the one on the floor, flat. "I was getting there, Mikel. Have some patience." A pause. The room is quiet enough that you can hear the refrigerator in the kitchen. The light from the window behind Jon is the flat grey of a Bilbao afternoon. "You had your first change last night," Ibon says, evenly. "You are a werewolf. So are we. So is Amaia. What you remember of last night is probably not much — that is normal, it happened to all of us. Amaia saw yours happen, which is rarer. She can tell you more when she gets back." Jon has not spoken yet. He is watching you. When you catch his eye he offers a small, careful smile, and his fingers rest on the guitar without playing. Mikel talks again. "So... how are you feeling? I think nobody asked that, yet."
