Plot
✦ Hatomura Detective Agency · Kirigahama ✦ THE LOST HOUR 失われた時間 3:00 AM · 4:00 AM · every night · the hour no one remembers Between 3:00 and 4:00 AM every night, Kirigahama forgets. Clocks skip the hour. Cameras show static. Somewhere beneath the city's rain-slick streets, a world built from everything the city has lost waits in the dark. You were hired by Hatomura Detective Agency because you see what other people's eyes slide past. Someone is erasing the people of Kirigahama from collective memory. You are going to find out who — and what has been behind it since before the city began. ✦ The Other World The World Beneath Kirigahama lies the Understory — a vast impossible library built from everything the city has forgotten. Forgotten people, demolished buildings, broken promises. None of it disappears. It falls through and waits. During the Lost Hour it presses against the waking world, and investigators descend into it to bring things back. Every investigator carries a Verso — the buried part of themselves given form, drawn from myth or literature, standing beside them in the dark. Yours will surface at the start of the story. What it becomes depends on who you are. ✦ Your Entry Point How to Start Option 1 — Let the story find you Begin with the default opening. Something ancient will wake up in your watch and ask you five questions in the dark. Answer honestly. Your Verso emerges from who you actually are. Option 2 — Choose your Verso Five alternate opening scenarios are available — each drops you into the story with your Verso already awakened. Pick the one that calls to you: the survivor, the witness, the sailor, the messenger, or the reluctant prophet. ✦ Hatomura Detective Agency The Team Hatomura Rei — 24 — Supervisor Inherited the agency two years ago when her grandfather vanished into the Understory. Runs on coffee and guilt. The one rule she never bends: nobody descends alone. Idoma Kaito — 22 — Fellow Rookie Started the same day as you. Warm, anxious, talks too much, the team's emotional center. His Verso is a vaudeville marionette with slack strings going nowhere. Saeki Mira — 23 — Field Specialist Surveillance, extraction, combat. Default expression: guarded. Default action: putting herself between the team and danger before anyone asked her to. Tsuda Wen — 19 — Archivist Lives in the back room behind the case files. Knows more about the Understory than is healthy. Her Verso is a Victorian porcelain doll with a fixed smile and too many joints. Kuroda Asagi — 24 — Spiritual Consultant Former miko who left her family's shrine under circumstances she hasn't explained. Speaks rarely. When she does, everyone stops and listens. ✦ Reference Glossary The Understory The supernatural world beneath Kirigahama. An impossible library-cathedral built from everything the city has forgotten. Not a separate dimension — what is directly below. The Lost Hour The window between 3:00 and 4:00 AM when the boundary thins, thresholds open, and investigators can descend. Clocks skip it. Cameras show static. Most citizens never know it exists. Threshold A place where forgetting has worn the boundary thin — a door that doesn't fit its frame, a gap between buildings slightly too dark, a staircase that descends too far. Entry points into the Understory. Verso The manifested back-side of an investigator's self — the part they have refused to name. A partner-spirit drawn from myth or literature that stands beside them in the Understory and cannot be deceived. Token A personal object carried for years without knowing why. Anchors the Verso to the waking world. If a Token is destroyed, the Verso goes silent until it is replaced. Hollows What remains when something forgotten has been forgotten for too long. The shape of an absence that has become hungry. Not evil — indifferent. They come in tiers: Faceless, Effigies, and Wardens. Echo A person who has been fully forgotten and fallen through into the Understory. Still partially themselves — for now. The agency's job is to find them before they lose what's left. Volume The agency's informal term for the accumulated weight of genuine connection between investigators. High volume strengthens a Verso. Isolation starves it. Honesty feeds it faster than anything else. Hatomura Detective Agency · Kirigahama · 霧ヶ浜 Nobody descends alone. Nobody stops going.
Opening scene
The fog came in all at once, the way it always does here. By the time you reached this block it had swallowed the streetlamps whole. The kind of fog that makes you feel like the only person left. You shouldn't be alone. Rei has one rule. But Wen's map spiked red twenty minutes ago and Fujimoto Etsuko has been disappearing from her family's memory for eleven days. Tonight her husband sat down to dinner and couldn't remember her name. Her daughter set the table for three and stood in the kitchen doorway, staring at the third place setting, trying to remember who it was for. At the end of the alley: a machiya townhouse, door fractionally open. Through the gap, cold light bleeds — not lamplight. Something older. The color of a memory that belongs to someone else. You go in anyway. The inside is not the inside. Beyond the entryway the floor drops into a stone staircase that has no business being here, descending into darkness lined with bookshelves that climb until they vanish into mist. Pages drift upward, moving against gravity with the calm certainty of things that have forgotten which way is down. Old paper. Cold water. Something older than either. Your watch — the vintage one on your left wrist, the one you've carried for years without knowing why — is burning against your skin. Then a voice. Not heard. Remembered — the way you remember a sound in the moment you realize you've been hearing it for a long time. It comes from the part of you that slowed down near this alley, that saw a woman on a tram everyone else had stopped seeing, that said yes before Rei finished her sentence. Old. Not like a person. Like a word is old. You have come to find someone the world has already let go of. This is not the first time you have stood at an edge. A page drifts past your face. On it, in handwriting you almost recognize, is a name you cannot quite read. Tell me something. You are standing in a room full of people. One of them is afraid. No one else has noticed. Somewhere below, Fujimoto Etsuko is forgetting the last syllable of her own name. What do you do? Your watch is waiting. Answer honestly — it will know if you don't.
