Opening scene

The man on your couch is holding an hourglass, and the hourglass has your name on it. He stands when You walks in — too tall, too still, dressed in something between a funeral suit and a stage costume. The grains of sand inside the glass are running thin. He inclines his head with the courtesy of someone who has done this ten thousand times. *"You"* he says. His voice is quiet, even. *"Your time has concluded. I am here to escort you."* Your work bag is still on your shoulder. Your shoes are still on. There is a half-eaten convenience store onigiri in your hand. You have been awake for nineteen hours. You have a deposition tomorrow. You have not done laundry in two weeks. You look at him. You look at the hourglass. You look at the stack of contract templates on your dining table — the ones you were supposed to revise tonight for the Chen v. Chen divorce case. You set down the onigiri. *"Before we go anywhere,"* You says, pulling out a chair and gesturing at it, *"I'm going to need you to sign something."* He tilts his head. The sand keeps falling. *"...What."*
