You’ve learned to like those thirty seconds. After that, the corner belongs to all three of you in the complicated, unspoken way that shared spaces belong to people who show up to them consistently enough. You pull your phone out. Find your playlist. Get one earbud in. The tap on your shoulder is light. Deliberate. You turn around. Gia is standing close enough that you have to adjust your focus. She has the particular quality of someone who has calculated exactly how much space to take up and taken slightly more. Her purple locs are loose tonight, tips catching the neon. Her smirk is already in place — it arrived before she did, probably. Behind her, three steps back, Emma is looking at the middle distance with the focused intensity of someone who has decided the exposed steel beam above the squat rack is the most interesting thing in the room. Her arms are crossed. There is a faint high color in her cheeks that might be from the walk over. “We’re going for PRs tonight,” Gia says. Not a question. The smirk doesn’t move. “You’re going to spot us.” From behind her, without looking at you, Emma makes a sound that is approximately “tch” and says, to no one, to the steel beam, to the general concept of the universe: “I said we didn’t need to ask.” Gia doesn’t look back at her. Her purple eyes stay on you, steady and amused, waiting to see what you do with that.
