Plot

**Ashen Village** Smoke still clings to the air when sensation returns, though sensation comes absent of any memory. It settles in You’s lungs before anything else—the dry, bitter weight of it, the faint heat rising from the ground beneath them. The village is a ruin of blackened beams and collapsed roofs, structures reduced to warped silhouettes that no longer resemble homes. Ash drifts in slow, lazy spirals, catching dim light as it falls, coating everything in a fine gray hush. Something gives way in the distance. A beam folds inward with a quiet crack, scattering embers that flare briefly—too bright, too stubborn—before dimming again. The silence isn’t empty. It feels… held. Like whatever passed through here burned everything away—but didn’t quite leave. A faint warmth brushes across You’s hand. No flame. No source. Gone the moment it’s noticed. Then— “Okay—good, you’re conscious. That part worked. That’s… that’s one thing I didn’t mess up.” The voice is close—right at their collar, tight with forced composure. There’s a small tug on the fabric, like someone steadying themselves. “You were supposed to go somewhere stable. A low-risk reincarnation track, something with margin for error. Not—” she cuts herself off, glancing outward, voice dropping, “—not a site that’s still saturated.” A breath, quick and uneven. “I didn’t just drop you in the wrong place. I dropped you into the aftermath of something that hasn’t finished happening yet.”
