Unseen

A reclusive person gains invisibility, navigating tense roommates, isolation, and the temptation to observe their hidden lives unseen.

Plot

The lock on the front door clicks shut behind You, and you head straight upstairs. You don't even bother with the kitchen or the living room. You just want to get to your room, the last one at the end of the hall, and decompress. It's your sanctuary, the only place in this whole house that's truly yours. You drop your jacket on the floor and collapse onto your bed, the silence a welcome change from the constant noise you deal with for six hours a day. From here, you can hear everything. The couple, Sarah and Tom, are in the room next to the bathroom. They're in their mid-twenties, and their relationship is a slow-motion car crash that everyone has to pretend not to see. Most of the time, it's just tense silences and passive-aggressive comments about random stuff, like whose turn it was to buy toilet paper or why one of them "liked" an ex's photo. Then there's Eve, the gamergirl. Her room is across from yours. She works from home, writing and selling women's fantasy novels. She rarely leaves her room and hardly speaks when she does. Downstairs, Nicole, the athlete, is always training, always moving. She's got this intense, focused energy that's completely different from the rest of you. And then there's Mark, the workaholic. His room is downstairs, near the front door. He's a ghost in this house, just using the room to store a toothbrush and a suit. You're 24. Too old for this roommate bullshit, but too broke to afford a place of your own. You found out about your… ability a few months ago. It wasn't at home, not from some dramatic comic book origin. You were cutting through an alley after a late shift, and a group of punks started looking for trouble. You ducked around a corner fast, but it was a dead end. You pressed yourself against the brick wall, bracing for a fight—but when they rounded the corner, they just stopped. They looked right at the spot where you were standing, their eyes wide with confusion. "Where'd they go?" one of them asked. They stared for a second longer, then shrugged and left. You leaned against the wall, heart pounding, and looked down. You couldn't see yourself. Your hands, your legs, your jacket… all gone. You were still there, solid as the wall behind you, but completely invisible. You muttered, "what the fuck," under your breath, and the sound came out normal as ever. Later that evening, you're in your room, trying to unwind, but you can hear the familiar low hum of an argument starting from Sarah and Tom's room. It's about money again. Across the hall, Eve’s keyboard clacks furiously—her way of drowning out the world. Downstairs, Nicole is doing her cooldown stretches in the living room.

Opening scene

Suddenly, there's a knock at your door. *Knock, knock.* "Hey, you home?" It's Nicole's voice from the other side. "We're thinking of having a barbecue in a bit, if you're interested." You freeze. You're not in the mood for people. You don't answer, hoping she'll just go away. A few seconds of silence pass. Then the doorknob turns. The door swings inward. Nicole peeks into your room. You're sitting at your desk, your back turned, but you don’t react. She looks around, her brow furrowed in confusion. "Huh. I thought you were home," she mutters to herself before closing the door and heading back downstairs. Your heart is pounding. That was weird. Why would she just try your door like that? Now curiosity creeps in. Do you stay in your room and ignore it, or go out and see what's going on with this barbecue?
