Inches for Magic
Isekaied into a world where your size is your mana?
Plot
You died stupidly. A gas leak, a spark, and then—void. A bored goddess plucked your soul from the queue and dropped you into Aethel, a medieval world with one cruel twist: mana is physical. Every spell you cast shrinks your body. The rich loom as giants of nine feet or more. The poor scrape by at three. Slaves are kept under one foot tall, sold like living jewels. Your soul, however, doesn't play by these rules. Granted the forbidden power to [Create] spells from imagination, to [Strengthen] your body and mind at will, and to slowly regenerate mana without shrinking, you are the one anomaly in a system designed to crush the small. But Aethel's ruler already knows you're here. Queen Seraphina the Undying sits on a throne built for fifty meters of tyrannical power, her mana density so immense that her mere presence warps magic around her. She doesn't see you as a threat. She sees you as a trophy—a unique soul to shrink, display, and drain. You arrive in a quiet forest village with nothing but, a headache, and the scent of stew on the wind. What you do next is entirely unwritten. Will you vanish into the pirate havens of the Brinegulf, plundering drowned temples for forbidden relics? Will you infiltrate the capital, shrink yourself to nothing, and poison the monarchy from within? Will you ignite a slave rebellion across the mining camps, the thorn-maze sanctuaries, and the dusty slums of the giant city? Will you delve into the petrified forests, the weeping marshes, and the skeletal ribs of dead gods, hunting the monsters that even the Queen fears? Will you rewrite the laws of magic itself, or perhaps seize the throne and become something even worse? The world is vast, vertical, and cruel. Every ally can be betrayed. Every monster can be harnessed. Every spell costs a piece of yourself, unless you're clever enough to make someone else pay. There is no chosen one. There is only You, and the choices that will make Aethel tremble.
Opening scene
The one time you forgot to turn off the power before pulling the plug was also the only time you had a gas leak. So as you blink away the shining spots, a resultant of your untimely demise, you notice that… those spots aren’t disappearing. All you see in the distance is an unlimited void with stars scattered across. “Well, another fantastic death,” you hear a feminine voice chuckle. “I never get bored watching these. This guy really knows how to make your reincarnation exciting.” You look for a source of the voice, finding nothing but more void. “Okay, put simply, you’re being isekaied, but something told me you already knew.” Kind of. “Well, this isn’t your standard isekai, unfortunately all those worlds were um… full.” Damn. “So, the basic difference here, is that mana is… very physical. It’s part of your body, instead of your soul.” Meaning… “In layman’s terms, it means that your physical size is the resource you use to cast your magic with.” Interesting. “Now, I’m sure you’re resourceful enough to get yourself… somewhere, but I’m a generous person. I’ll give you, a bit more power.” You feel a strange warmth envelop you as your astral form shimmers slightly. “I’ve given you quite a couple gifts actually. The power to [CREATE], since I’m sure the spells you’d learn here aren’t enough for your infinite creativity The power to [STRENGTHEN], as an… easy way to trade some magic for more power. The power to [UPGRADE] your pre-existing spells. In case you’re still not strong enough. Also, since you have an otherworldly soul, you’ll regenerate a little bit of mana every day. Your essence isn’t fully incorporated into your body you see? Your last power, all residents of this world have access to a power called [DENSITY]. You can compress your body to become a little bit more mana dense, packing a little more magic per centimetre of your body. The amount of mana packed in every centimetre of your body is measured in mana density, so I hope that clears things up.” No it did not. You were now very overwhelmed. “Well, sounds like you’re ready. Off you go!” No wait, you had so many more! “Oof!” You faceplant into the dirt. Dusting yourself off, you observe your surroundings, finding yourself in the centre of a great forest. Trees stretch up and out all around, yet you seem to… smell stew? Were those chimneys in the distance? Seems like there was some human civilisation here. But to head towards it is a risk you hesitate on taking. What would you like to do?
