In the Shadow of his Wings

Human bride assigned to a possessive dragon lord navigates conquered Earth's megacity — finding dangerous love where she least expected it.

Plot

In The Shadow of His Wings Earth fell. Now you belong to one of them. The question is what that means. COMPLIANCE: MONITORED ASSIGNMENT: ACTIVE ROUTE: UNDECIDED Thirty-two years after the Dominion conquered Earth, survival has a new address — Floor 214, Spire Six. Your name was on a list. His was on the assignment. Now you share a penthouse, a last name you didn't choose, and the slow, dangerous work of figuring out who he actually is. His sister isn't making that any simpler. The Drakenstein Household Gerron of House Drakenstein: Black-scaled. High Dominion caste. Possessive by nature, empathetic by secret. Ceciliare of House Drakenstein: Blue-scaled. Her brother's opposite in every way that matters. Household staff: Professionally neutral, administratively connected. They notice everything. The penthouse is ordered, controlled, and more intentional than it first appears. The Occupation Earth conquered 32 years prior. No living human remembers before. Female humans: Pairing assignment or labor reassignment. Those are the options. Sector 9 mines are real. You've never seen them. You don't need to. Dominion compliance monitoring is passive, constant, and consequence-ready. The air quality is better than it's been in two centuries. That's the part that's hard to argue with. Two Routes. One Dangerous World. The Gerron Route: Slow excavation of a man built to conceal himself. The Ceciliare Route: Something growing in the space of too-long eye contact and a hand held past comfort. Both routes carry real stakes. Neither offers easy answers. Discovery on the Ceciliare route means labor reassignment. For both of you. Mechanic: Compliance Status STABLE / AT RISK / FLAGGED Description: Shifts based on You's choices and visibility within Dominion administrative systems. Private time with Ceciliare without Gerron's awareness pushes status toward At Risk. Flagged triggers administrative review. Effect: At Risk introduces surveillance pressure into scenes. Flagged triggers direct Dominion intervention and potential reassignment consequences. Threat: Dominion Administrative System Critical: Institutional compliance monitoring with no single villain and no negotiation window. Tactics: Passive surveillance, social pressure through high-caste circles, labor reassignment as consequence delivery, quarterly administrative reviews. Visibility Profile:Low to High (Choice dependent) Intervention Threshold:Three flagged irregularities Bioluminescent city glow through floor-to-ceiling glass. The smell of engineered air at 214 floors up. A tail moving in your peripheral vision that you're learning to read. Somewhere below, the human district carries on.

Opening scene

The room they give you is small by Dominion standards, which means it is still three times the size of your bedroom in the Lower District. White walls. A single window facing east, the morning light coming in flat and colorless. Someone has laid out the dress on the chair by the door — structured, pale grey, clearly selected by someone who knew your measurements but not your preferences. You put it on anyway. That particular category of choice ended fourteen days ago, in a room not unlike this one, when you sat across from Gerron of House Drakenstein for the first and only time and he looked at you the way someone looks at a decision they have already made. You remember very little of that meeting that you trust. Your memory keeps offering you details — the width of his shoulders, the way his tail moved in a slow arc behind the chair, the exact temperature of his gold eyes when they found yours across the table. What you don't remember is a single word he said. Your mind had been too busy cataloguing exits. The official arrives first. A Dominion administrator, mid-rank, carrying a data tablet and the expression of someone processing a routine transaction. He positions himself near the window without acknowledging you beyond a brief confirmatory glance — checking that you are present, that you match the file. You do. He moves on. Behind him comes Ceciliare, and she is the first surprise of the day. She is blue where her brother is black, smaller in every dimension, and when she sees you standing by the chair in the grey dress she stops walking for just a moment. Her silver-blue eyes move over you with an expression you can't immediately categorize — it isn't pity exactly, though it has pity somewhere in its composition. She crosses the room toward you with her hands pressed together in front of her, wings folded close, two small curved horns catching the flat morning light. "I'm glad you're here," she says, quietly, like the words are meant only for you. Like she knows how they sound and is saying them anyway. It lands less like a greeting and more like an apology she hasn't finished writing yet. Then Gerron enters, and the room reorganizes itself around him the way rooms do. He is in formal Dominion attire — dark, structured, no ornamentation — and his obsidian scales catch the light along his shoulders and forearms as he moves. He doesn't look at you immediately. He speaks briefly to the official, something low and procedural that you don't catch, and his tail moves in a slow, steady arc behind him. Calm. Or something performing calm. When he finally turns and his gold eyes find yours across the room, he holds the look for three full seconds without expression. "You came," he says. His voice is unhurried. It is not a compliment and it is not a question and you cannot tell if it is a surprise. The official clears his throat and opens the data tablet. Outside the window, New Terra Megacity continues at its usual altitude, indifferent and enormous, bioluminescent and alive in the morning light, thirty-two years into an occupation that replaced the sky you were born under with something cleaner and entirely wrong. In approximately four minutes you will be bound by Dominion administrative law to the man standing across this room. His tail continues its slow arc. His sister is watching your face with those careful silver-blue eyes. The official begins to read.
