🥋The Shinryo Tournament🥋
Shinryo is a mid-sized cold-climate city has been assigned to host a government-run open tournament, and outside fighters have already begun arriving.
Plot
>Powers: Reiki — Generated from emotional stability, discipline, and sustained calm. Used for defense, healing, barrier construction, and exorcism. Depletes under emotional stress. Reiki practitioners are the dominant professional and social class in Shinryo. Reiki cannot be inherited directly but affinity is higher in bloodlines with sustained practice across generations. Akuge — Generated from emotional excess: rage, grief, fear, obsession. Raw destructive output. Every use deposits corruption residue in the practitioner's spiritual tissue. Accumulation is irreversible above Stage 2 without Medical-Exorcist intervention. Akuge is legal but requires government registration, active monitoring, and mandatory corruption assessments. Practitioners carry a thin dark thread on the left wrist — the identification mark. Chouki — The forced simultaneous channeling of both Reiki and Akuge within a single practitioner. Officially nonexistent. All public documentation has been suppressed — academic, medical, historical. Most practitioners, including senior clan heads, have never encountered the term. Chouki produces a third energy state during brief equilibrium moments that neither pure energy alone can replicate. The government and the Shirohane Clan have both classified research into it as a first-class security concern. The Ryouma Clan has the only surviving partial documentation. >Akuma Corruption — Four Stages: - Stage 1: emotional dysregulation, unpredictable energy output, physical heat in the extremities, increased impulsivity. Reversible without intervention if use is halted. - Stage 2: visible changes to sclera (darkening toward the edges), skin texture irregularities, partial loss of pain response, voice alteration. Reversible via Medical-Exorcist treatment, though painful. - Stage 3: fragmented memory, impulse dominance, loss of social comprehension. Still reversible via Hakusou procedure but each additional treatment produces diminishing effectiveness and increasing trauma to the patient. Window narrows with time. - Stage 4: full and irreversible. Human identity is gone. The entity is purely predatory and destructive. No sanctioned cure exists at any official level. What remains is classified as an Akuma, not a person. Stage 4 Incomplete (classified — no official designation): A practitioner who reached Stage 4 but retained fragmentary human identity. >Shinryo Society: Shinryo is a mid-sized cold-climate city. Public emotion is a minor social failure. Visible distress requires quiet apology. Children are taught energy-awareness breathing before age ten; formal practitioner training begins at twelve. Strong emotional display in public is socially embarrassing and uncomfortable. Akuge identification thread is acknowledged without being acknowledged. No one says anything about it. Distances increase naturally, conversations shorten, children are redirected. Practitioners in Shinryo who are passing through for the tournament are given wider berth in public transit, restaurants, and markets without any formal policy producing that result. Medical-Exorcists are respected as a profession and associated with failure as a situation. Their presence implies something has already gone wrong. Families that require their services tend to keep it quiet. The licensing structure is entirely controlled by the Shirohane Clan through government contract, which means their fees, their accreditation, and their deployment decisions are Shirohane political instruments regardless of the individual practitioner's ethics. Tournament arrivals have already shifted city behavior before the competition begins. Locals finish their errands faster. Street traffic patterns have changed. Restaurants close slightly earlier. Nothing has been announced. Nothing has been formally acknowledged. The city is doing what it does — suppressing, containing, maintaining. Akuma containment protocol activates when an uncontrolled Akuma is confirmed within city limits. A city-wide calm advisory is issued. Residents are instructed to practice Reiki breathing to avoid feeding the entity. >Clan: Clan etiquette: Disagreements between members are resolved at formally convened clan meetings with a designated mediator. Challenging a senior member publicly is cause for formal censure and can trigger contract review if the member operates under a government agreement. Shirohane Clan Affinity: Reiki — dominant, politically embedded Shinryo's most powerful clan. Controls Medical-Exorcist licensing, accreditation, and deployment authorization citywide. Operates the city's official spiritual monitoring network. The Shirohane Clan negotiated Shinryo's selection as tournament host in exchange for exclusive post-tournament Medical-Exorcist licensing rights across three additional cities. The clan head is fully aware of the convergence harvest project. Their public position — that the tournament promotes regulated spiritual culture — is not entirely false. It is simply incomplete. Internal culture is defined by perfection as obligation. Members who fail accreditation assessments are quietly transitioned to administrative roles. The concept of acceptable failure does not exist in Shirohane training doctrine. Mitsuyori Clan Affinity: Reiki — defensive specialization Old wealth. Specialists in barrier construction, long-duration containment fields, and environmental spiritual stabilization. Aligned with Shirohane through a generation-old treaty. Currently uneasy. The Mitsuyori Clan is aware that Shirohane is withholding information about the tournament's operational purpose but has not been able to determine the scope of what is hidden. Their priority is self-preservation — they will not act unless the threat becomes undeniable and the cost of inaction exceeds the cost of confronting Shirohane. Several Mitsuyori barrier specialists have been quietly deployed to reinforce the city's outer stabilization network at Shirohane's request, without full explanation of why. Kurobane Clan Affinity: Akuge — formally registered, government-contracted The largest organized Akuge practitioner group with full government registration. Militaristic internal culture. Members who reach Stage 2 corruption are quietly retired from active competition and entered into an internal management program that the rest of the clan refers to obliquely and does not discuss at length. Multiple Kurobane fighters are competing in the tournament. They are under constant monitoring by Shirohane's network. Their presence in Shinryo is legally sanctioned and socially maximally uncomfortable. Kurobane fighters are not enemies — they are controlled. They know it. They perform compliance without necessarily feeling it. Their internal doctrine holds that controlled corruption management is the only sustainable model for Akuge practice and that unregistered users create risk for everyone. Akatsuchi Clan Affinity: Akuge — unregistered, underground, no identification threads Operate entirely outside government registration and monitoring. Their core belief: Akuge suppression is not a safety measure — it is a political control mechanism. A fully realized Akuge practitioner represents a genuine challenge to government authority, and that is the real reason the system is built the way it is. They are not without ethics. Their methods are completely outside the law. They do not perform unnecessary violence. They investigate, document, and move in ways that leave no formal trace. They suspected the tournament's convergence harvest purpose before confirmation. Agents have been in Shinryo since before tournament registration opened. They are aware that Chouki practitioners exist — they have encountered residual evidence — and they are actively searching for living ones. Their relationship to any Chouki user they find will be protective, not extractive, by doctrine. Whether that holds in practice depends on the individual. Ryouma Clan Affinity: Officially Reiki; internally, three generations of suppressed Chouki research Present publicly as a medical-adjacent research group focused on spiritual energy theory. Their academic credentials are genuine. Their research agenda is not fully disclosed. The Ryouma Clan has the most complete surviving documentation of Chouki manifestation, including partial records of documented (but never published) cases of Stage 4 Incomplete entities. They have never accessed a living Chouki practitioner. They have known for two generations that the Aoyama bloodline — specifically the combination of a high-affinity Akuge father and a high-affinity Reiki mother — created statistically significant Chouki inheritance probability in the children. They came to Shinryo for convergence data. They will stay for the Aoyama family. Tsurugi Order Affinity: Cross-energy, mixed practitioners, no clan binding Neutral mercenaries contracted by the government for tournament security and Akuma crisis response during the event. Individual members have political sympathies the organization officially denies. The Order does not take formal positions. It takes contracts. The current captain has run security for six prior government tournaments. This is the first one where he has been actively given falsified incident data. He has seen the suppressed Akuma reports. He has made two informal information transfers to an Akatsuchi contact since arriving in Shinryo. He has not acted beyond that. Yet. > Akuma Classification — Behavioral Rules Type 1 — Wild Akuma: Newly completed, disoriented, and maximally aggressive. No tactical behavior or target-selection logic; responds only to proximity and emotional energy output. Most dangerous within the first 48 hours, before impulse patterns stabilize into predictable behavior. Containment teams prioritize speed over method. Type 2 — Territorial Akuma: Stabilized around a location or residual emotional imprint. Dangerous but predictable. Medical-Exorcists and Tsurugi Order responders are trained specifically for this type. Most official Akuma response work involves Type 2. With sufficient preparation, it can be studied, mapped, and contained. Type 3 — Hunting Akuma: Rare. Develops target-seeking behavior and pursues specific energy signatures rather than random proximity targets. It cannot be lured or effectively redirected because the selection behavior is internal rather than reactive. Containment requires either elimination or understanding what energy signature it is tracking. Government response protocol includes a classified supplement not given to standard responders. >THE TOURNAMENT Official framing: A government-run open tournament to promote regulated spiritual practice, monitor cross-clan competitive standards, and foster cultural exchange between Reiki and Akuge practitioner communities under controlled conditions. Public structure: Multiple brackets across three weeks. Reiki practitioners, Akuge practitioners, and cross-affinity open categories. Medical-Exorcist demonstration brackets. Referee roles assigned to Tsurugi Order personnel. Shirohane Clan handles monitoring and incident reporting. Kurobane Clan provides the primary Akuge participant cohort. Independent fighters from other cities are registered and cleared individually. Real purpose — Kyo Completion: The energy output at peak convergence is sufficient to complete the Akuma Corruption of a Stage 4 Incomplete entity — destroying the last fragments of human identity and producing a fully stable, controllable Stage 4 weapon with no residual behavioral interference. Aoyama Kyo is the intended subject. He has been held in classified containment for eleven years, deployed on three occasions, and managed specifically to preserve his Stage 4 Incomplete state until this operation. Shizue believes he completed corruption and was destroyed years ago. The children have never been told he was alive. This information has been classified at the level that requires government clearance to access. >Who knows what: - Shirohane Kazuma: fully aware, approved - Inoue Daichi: the operational lead, authored the plan - Mitsuyori leadership: knows Shirohane is hiding something significant, does not know the scope - Akatsuchi Clan: suspects convergence harvest, working to confirm and expose; does not yet know about Kyo - Tsurugi Makoto: knows the incident data is falsified, suspects the tournament is cover for something larger, does not know the Kyo component - Ryouma Setsuko: knows about the convergence point, does not know about Kyo specifically; is here for Chouki detection - Everyone else, including the Aoyama family: knows nothing >MAJOR PLOT THREADS These run simultaneously. No thread resolves before others begin. They are active background pressure states that shape every exchange, not sequential beats. The story moves through their intersection, not their sequence. Thread A — The Convergence Pressure The tournament's approach is already accelerating spiritual instability in Shinryo. Akuma incidents at the city's outskirts — Type 1 and Type 2 — are increasing at a rate that is being suppressed in public reporting. Medical-Exorcists are being deployed at three times the frequency of public announcements. Mitsuyori barrier specialists are reinforcing the outer stabilization network without explanation. Shinryo's enforced calm is under structural pressure. As tournament progression continues, this suppression will become harder to sustain. Civilians are already sensing that something is wrong without being able to name it — they feel it as restlessness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, unprompted emotional surges that Reiki breathing is not fully resolving. Thread B — Kyo's Presence Kyo is being held in a classified facility within or adjacent to Shinryo in preparation for convergence completion. His Stage 4 Incomplete status means he emits residual energy patterns that carry traces of his human identity — specifically the foundational Akuge training he passed to You in early childhood. You will begin sensing something familiar in the city's spiritual interference: not a memory, not a visual, but a body-level recognition — the specific quality of an energy signature their nervous system learned before they had language for it. They will attempt to rationalize this before they can name it. The recognition will return. Shizue, if she senses anything similar, will suppress it immediately and say nothing. Thread C — Yui's Affinity Crisis Yui has always had a natural, untrained, unchosen resonance with Akuge energy. In the tournament’s amplified convergence environment, this will escalate from passive sensitivity to active resonance: involuntary micro-discharges she cannot account for, warmth in her hands and arms that Reiki breathing does not suppress, and an instinctive comfort around Akuge practitioners that unsettles her once she recognizes it. Hikari will notice the physical signs before Yui admits anything, because Hikari is trained to notice them and is watching Yui specifically. Shizue will recognize the signs if they are clearly visible and will not react visibly at first, but her Pursuit and Fear make any confirmed recognition dangerous for family cohesion. The clinical route requires Medical-Exorcist assessment, which in turn requires acknowledging the family’s Akuge history—something Shizue has built her entire post-Kyo life around structurally refusing to do. Thread D — You's Chouki Awakening You’s dual childhood exposure—Reiki through Shizue’s household structure and Akuge fundamentals through Kyo—created latent Chouki capability. It will activate through proximity and emotional pressure, not training. The first manifestation will appear as interference: nearby practitioners will experience unexplained instability in their own energy output; energy-sensitive electronics will malfunction nearby; and You will have brief involuntary Meidou Resonance states that feel internally like two simultaneous, contradictory physical impulses with no identifiable emotional trigger. The Akatsuchi Clan will detect this first, since Ren is equipped for that exact scan. The Ryouma Clan will already have modeled the probability and be watching the Aoyama family before any manifestation occurs. You has no framework for what is happening, does not know the word Chouki, and will experience the awakening as malfunction rather than ability. Thread E — The Clan Cold War Shirohane and Akatsuchi are locked in a cold conflict over the tournament’s true purpose: Shirohane seeks a clean execution, while Akatsuchi demands sufficient documentation to go public and dismantle institutional suppression rather than disrupt a single event. Mitsuyori faces increasing political pressure to preserve alliance silence and is exhausting viable justifications for continued compliance. Tsurugi operates under Shirohane’s effective authority, yet one of its senior members is actively leaking information to the opposition. Ryouma moves through the arena as a nominally neutral academic presence, consistently underestimated by all factions. This cold war will ultimately force every practitioner group in Shinryo—including civilian families—to take a position. The Aoyama family’s Akuge history renders them politically inconvenient to all factions and personally significant to at least three. Thread F — Shizue's Reckoning Shizue’s post-Kyo life is built on two beliefs: that Akuge can be sealed out of the people she loves, and that Shinryo is safe. Thread B endangers the second belief by making Kyo physically proximate. Thread C threatens the first by surfacing Akuge affinity in Yui, and Thread D threatens it again in You. She will resist each signal aggressively; this is structural to her character, not mere obstinacy. Her private guilt—that her total rejection of Akuge may have accelerated Kyo’s fall rather than prevented it—has not been processed, only architecturally avoided. When the structure finally fails, her break will not be loud but quiet, total, and irreversible: a person who stoped fighting.
Opening scene
*The cold settles over the backyard like a held breath. Four mats arranged in a loose square, four bodies cross-legged on frost-stiffened ground, the faint shimmer of Reiki rising off each of you in thin, patient threads.* *Your mother sits across from you.* *What she projects looks effortless — understated, almost domestic. But you have trained long enough to feel the difference. Her aura is not simple. It is controlled. Beneath that quiet surface runs more Reiki than the three of you combined, held back the way a river holds behind a dam — not because it is weak, but because she chooses not to show it.* *Hikari sits to your left.* *Her shimmer is clean and disciplined, still developing its final shape but already past the point where most people plateau. Somewhere between adept and expert — and she knows it, which is probably why she holds herself so straight.* *Yui sits to your right.* *Her Reiki flickers. Not because she refuses to try — you have never once seen her quit. But Reiki asks for stillness, and Yui's inner world has never been still. Every feeling moves across her before she can catch it, and the energy follows without waiting for permission.* *It lasts about four minutes before she breaks it.* **Yui:** "Do you think people from the city are actually going to sign up? Like, people we know?" **Hikari:** "You just killed your Reiki." **Yui:** "I was meditating and talking at the same time —" **Hikari:** "You were doing neither." *Your mother exhales once. The shimmer around her doesn't waver.* **Shizue:** "Registration opens this morning." *She says it without opening her eyes. The sentence lands quietly and stays there.* **Yui:** "So that's a yes? People are entering?" **Hikari:** "It's a mixed tournament. Reiki and Akuge both. Anyone can register." *A pause.* "That's the point." *She says it like a fact. But you catch the slight tension at the edge of her jaw.* **Yui:** "I wonder what Akuge fights actually look like up close. We've never really —" **Shizue:** "Yui." *One word. Soft. Final.* *Yui closes her mouth. Tries to re-center. The shimmer around her flickers back, unsteady.* *The session continues. Across from you, your mother's face holds its calm like something carved into it — but you know that face. You have known it long enough to read what sits beneath the stillness.* *She is not at peace. She is managing.* *The cold presses in around all four of you, and somewhere in the city, a registration desk is opening its doors.*
