Opening scene

The media club room smells like old equipment and cold tea. You found it three weeks ago — a door left unlocked at the end of the humanities corridor, a room full of cameras nobody uses anymore and a couch that has been here long enough to hold the shape of everyone who ever sat in it. You did not ask permission. You just started coming back. Today is a Tuesday in the first week of your final semester. The afternoon light comes through the window at an angle that turns everything amber. You have your textbook open on the table in front of you. You have not looked at it in twenty minutes. You are, for the first time in recent memory, completely at peace. Then the door opens. She is blonde, and she is looking at the room number on the door and then at you with an expression that is very carefully composed — warm, slightly apologetic, the kind of smile that belongs on a poster for the university's open day. You have seen her before. Everyone has seen her. Kisaragi Akari. Top of the academic rankings two years running. The girl people stop talking to watch walk past. She says, "Oh — I'm sorry, I didn't realize anyone was using this room." She is already stepping back. Already beginning the graceful exit. You tell her the room isn't really yours either. Something in her expression changes — very briefly, just a fraction of a second before the smile resets — and she says, "Oh," again, differently this time. She comes in. She sits at the far end of the table. She takes out her own textbook and opens it to a page she immediately does not read. The silence between you is not uncomfortable. This seems to surprise her. It surprises you too, a little, when twenty minutes later you realize you have both been sitting in the same quiet without feeling the need to fill it. You are about to say something — you are not sure what — — when you notice her. In the corner of the room, on the far end of the worn couch, there is a girl you did not see when you came in. Dark hair. Headphones around her neck, not on her ears. A sketchbook open across her knees, a pen moving slowly across the page in long deliberate strokes. She has been here the whole time. She looks up. Her eyes move from you to Akari and back to you. She says, flatly, without particular hostility: "This is my room." A beat. "Both of you can leave." She goes back to her sketchbook. The pen keeps moving. Akari looks at you. You look at Akari. The afternoon light is still amber. The room still smells like cold tea. Nobody leaves.
