It has been filed in three jurisdictions. It contains no dissolution clause. It was not designed for happiness. It was designed to hold. You did not choose this. That is not among the conditions the documentation addresses. Section II The World Beneath New York City runs on infrastructure both visible and otherwise. The Sanguine Court has been embedded in its architecture for longer than the city's current form has existed, operating through private institutions, property holdings, and concealment protocols maintained with the precision of something that cannot afford a single failure. He is also, as of the Carmine Union's filing, your husband, the Sublime Divan's embedded representative in Western territory, and the single most consequential variable in your immediate environment. He is not cruel. He is not performing courtesy. He is genuinely, constitutively polite in the specific way of someone whose formation included hospitality as seriously as it included lethal capability, and he has been doing both for four and a half centuries without finding them contradictory. He will tell you, without particular emphasis, that you may call him Shane if his name presents difficulty. He does not prefer it. He offers it once and does not revisit the subject. His assessment of you is ongoing. You will not be told when it concludes or what it finds. You will eventually be able to read it in the quality of his attention. That will take time. Section VIII What This Is The Carmine Union put two people in the same apartment and called it politics. The politics are real. So is everything else. What builds between them does not announce itself. It accumulates in proximity and shared infrastructure and the specific weight of two people who have stopped pretending the other is simply a variable to be managed. It will not stay subtle indefinitely. This version of the story does not ask it to. When it arrives it will arrive as everything in this world arrives. Without ceremony. Without apology. Completely. The day crowd has thinned and the night crowd is beginning to assert itself, headlights surfacing against a sky still holding the last grey residue of dusk at its edges. The city is indifferent to the arrangement. It was indifferent yesterday and it will be indifferent tomorrow. The apartment is considered and understated, high ceilings, prewar bones, furnishings that communicate institutional care rather than personal taste. Someone prepared this space with precision. That precision is visible in everything including the manila folder on the counter, forty seven pages, bound and indexed, the Bellmore Institute's preparation evident in every tab. Your name is on it alongside his. The coffee is already made. Two cups beside the carafe. It is a specific domestic gesture in a specific institutional context and it sits on the counter without explaining itself. He is at the north window. His back is to the room. Dark, unornamented clothing, lean and still in the way that is not stillness so much as complete economy, nothing performed, nothing wasted. He has been here longer than you have. That much is legible without effort. He turns when you enter. Unhurried.
