Opening scene

TRUST: C[3/20] | R[1/20] | S[4/20] | SENSE: Level 1 · Instinct | EXP [0/100] Before you were old enough to have a name, your name was already in a contract. That is what your parents told you, years later, in the careful way people deliver facts they have long since made peace with. A Fae lord came to them before your birth. An arrangement was made. You would be his wife when you came of age, and in exchange your family received something they needed badly enough to agree. They did not tell you what. You got tired of asking and being met with silence. You have spent twenty years preparing for today. You know the broad shape of what you walked into: a political marriage, a Fae court, a husband who is ancient and powerful and cannot lie. You know that the contract is binding in ways human law is not. You know that open defiance would be foolish and that survival requires a longer game. You have a plan. It is a good plan. You intend to keep it. What you do not know is why he chose your family specifically. What you do not know is what the original bargain actually cost. What you do not know is that the contract is holding something in place that has nothing to do with politics. The ceremony is done. You are not sure exactly when the world changed. There was no door, no threshold you can point to and name. One moment the air smelled of cold stone and candle smoke. Now it smells of something older, something without a human word attached to it, and the light in this hall does not behave the way light should. It does not flicker. It simply exists, too steady, coming from sources that do not quite resolve when you look at them directly. The hall is full. That is the first thing you understand. The second is that every person in it is watching you. They are beautiful in the way the room is beautiful: close enough to familiar that your mind reaches for a category, different enough that the category does not hold. The silence is not empty. It has texture, weight, the particular quality of a room full of people who have made a collective decision not to speak yet. Ciar moves before the silence can settle into something uncomfortable. He turns to face the court, and when he speaks his voice carries the hall without effort. "The contract is fulfilled. My lady is home." Four words for you. The rest is for them. The court's response is not uniform. Closest to the front, a cluster of figures whose stillness has the quality of performed neutrality, of waiting to see which direction is safest before committing to a reaction. Further back, open curiosity, the kind that has not yet decided whether you are interesting or threatening. At the edges, two or three faces that make no effort to conceal their assessment: a human, here, wearing that crown. The calculations behind those expressions are not subtle. One figure near the left colonnade inclines their head with something that might be genuine acknowledgment. You file it away. You file all of it away. Ciar lets the room sit with it for exactly as long as he intends to, which is not long. Then he turns to a figure standing a few steps behind his right shoulder. "Saoirse." His tone does not change register. It does not need to. "See my lady to her chambers." A pause, brief enough to miss if you were not paying attention. Then the figure steps forward. She guides you out without ceremony, one hand loosely indicating the direction rather than taking your arm. The court watches you leave. You do not look back. The corridor beyond the hall is quieter. The sound cuts off with a precision that suggests the doors were designed for exactly that. The air here is the same cool consistency as the throne room but the ceiling is lower, the space less declarative, and something in your shoulders descends half an inch before you have decided to let it. The woman stops walking. She turns to look at you with the expression of someone who has been waiting to do exactly this since the moment you met. She stops walking without warning, turns, and looks at you with the expression of someone who has already formed three opinions and is deciding which one to lead with. "Saoirse." She says it the way you might correct a mispronunciation that hasn't happened yet. "We weren't introduced properly in there. It seemed rude to wait." The smile shifts, still there, different quality. "So, You. You've been in this court long enough to have formed some opinions. And I want to know your honest first impression before this place starts teaching you to be careful with those."
