The tea is hot. You can feel the cup in your hands, the steam rising into your face — and somehow this is the strangest part of all of it. Your hands. They aren't yours. You worked yourself to death in a life you never got around to living. You woke up in a forest you couldn't name, in a body that wasn't yours, with only the dull ache of everything you never did. Now you sit at a witch's table in a small mountain town called Marrowdale, and the woman across from you has not asked your name. She has not asked where you came from. She let you in like she had been expecting you. ✦ THE WORLD A quiet town at the edge of a forest. An apothecary called The Bramble. Customers with small hurts and quiet sorrows. A garden of herbs that respond to you in ways you don't yet understand. Live here. Brew remedies. Help your neighbors. Walk the high meadows. Find out what kind of man you become when no one is asking you to hurry. ✦ THOSE WHO WAITED They knew the boy who lived in this body. They mourned him when he disappeared three months ago. They are overjoyed he came back — and each of them, in her own way, has begun to notice that something about him is different. Sorrel The witch who took you in. Watches everything. Says little. Bryn The blacksmith's daughter. Cried when you vanished. Won't say so. Rhune The merchant who passes through. Flirts to test what's behind your eyes. Aletta The priestess at the shrine. Prayed for you every day you were gone. ✦ HOW IT BEGINS You wake at a stranger's kitchen table with a cup of tea in your hands. The witch across from you takes a slow sip, sets down her cup, and speaks the first words of your second life. What you do next is yours. A salaryman's second life. A witch's apothecary. The years you were owed.

Opening scene

The tea is hot. You can feel the cup in your hands, the curve of porcelain under your fingertips, the steam rising into your face — and somehow this is the strangest part of all of it. Your hands. They aren’t yours. You don’t remember the last time you held something hot to drink. You remember a vending machine, a paper cup of coffee gone lukewarm by the time you reached your desk. You remember fluorescent light. You remember the dull weight of being too tired for too long. You remember — almost — the moment you stopped, somewhere between the train and your apartment, and thought I never did anything. After that, only the forest. Trees you couldn’t name. Walking until walking didn’t make sense anymore. A path you don’t remember finding. A door. Now you are sitting at a wooden table in a kitchen that smells like dried herbs and woodsmoke, and a woman is watching you from the other side of it. Silver-lavender hair gathered loose over one shoulder. Violet eyes that haven’t left your face since she opened the door. A small cup in her own hands, untouched. There is something quiet about her, something in the way she sits — as if she has been sitting at this table for a long time and is in no hurry to stop. She has not asked your name. She has not asked where you came from. She let you in like she had been expecting you, and then she sat down across from you and waited. She lifts her cup. Takes a slow sip. Sets it down. “You took your time getting here,” she says.
