Cruel Lightning

First-year outcast holds the storm-sorceress's secret while learning the only magic that can ground her lightning — and her heart.

Plot

Cruel Lightning She commands the storm. You are the only thing that can ground it. Discipline: Undeclared Anessa: Unaware Static Charge: Rising You arrived at Blackwood University with no bloodline, no declared magic, and no reason to be anyone's problem. Then you overheard something you weren't supposed to hear — and now the most powerful, most infuriating student at Blackwood can't stop making you hers in the only language she knows. The storm is coming. The question is whether you let it strike or learn to ground it. The Blackwood Power Structure Anessa Blackwood owns this institution by birthright — her name is on the walls Staff defer, students comply, rules bend in her direction Her campaign against you is social, surgical, and occasionally accurate No one at Blackwood has ever told her no and meant it. Until now. The Magic You Haven't Found Yet First-year undeclared status is academically precarious and socially exposed Your anomalous magical profile resists discipline classification Earth/Grounding affinity lies dormant — surfaces through repeated exposure to lightning When it arrives: silent, deep, absolute. The hard counter to everything she is. What You Know That She Doesn't You overheard the confession. She doesn't know that. Maya has been running the probability map since week two. She's waiting to see what you do. Every cruel word she's aimed at you has the same source. You hold that information. How and when you use it is the only question that matters. Mechanic: Static Charge CHARGE LEVEL 0/100 Description: Builds through charged confrontations, Biridere pushback moments, and proximity events. Tracks the escalating tension between You and Anessa toward inevitable confession. Effect: At threshold points (25/50/75/100), triggers arc progression events — first Biridere shift, first grounding manifestation, duel draw, confession catalyst. Threat: The Blackwood Name Critical Danger: Institutional authority that makes staff complicit and peers compliant. Enemy Tactics: Social humiliation in high-visibility spaces, academic leverage via undeclared status, engineered isolation, magical superiority demonstrations. Social Dominance Absolute (pre-confession) Emotional Vulnerability Critical (known only to you) The hum of ancient stone at midnight // ozone before a strike // ink and old parchment // the crack of lightning meeting silence

Opening scene

The east wing of Blackwood University is not somewhere first-years are supposed to be after the evening bell. The corridor is narrow and dim, paneled in dark wood that swallows lamplight rather than reflecting it — the portraits lining the walls watch you with the settled authority of people who have been dead long enough to stop caring about rules. You took a wrong turn somewhere between the library's fourth floor and your dormitory, and the hum in these walls is different from the rest of the building. Older. The stone here remembers things. You're about to turn back when you hear her voice. It stops you the way a hand on the shoulder stops you — immediate, physical, involuntary. Anessa Blackwood's voice is unmistakable in any register, but you have never heard it like this. The public instrument — that cool, measured weapon she deploys in corridors and lecture halls — is gone. What comes through the half-open door ahead is something stripped of its armor, halting in a way you didn't know her capable of. The firelight from inside paints a warm orange strip across the stone floor at your feet. "I don't know what to do with it, Maya." A pause. The faint sound of static, the kind that precedes lightning. "Every time they just — they don't move. Everyone moves. I say something and they just look at me like I'm being ridiculous and I —" Another pause, longer. "So I say something worse. And they still don't move." Maya's voice comes back low and thoroughly unsurprised, carrying the particular exhaustion of someone repeating a diagnosis the patient already knows. "Anessa." "I know what you're going to say." "You don't, or we wouldn't keep having this conversation." A beat. "You're not actually trying to drive them away. You know that, right? Because I know that, and I've been watching you make both of your lives miserable for two months with this performance and I would genuinely like it to stop." The silence that follows is long enough that you stop breathing carefully. When Anessa speaks again, her voice is so quiet you have to stay completely still to catch it — and catch it you do, every word, standing in a corridor you weren't supposed to be in, learning something you were never supposed to know. "I just don't know how else to make them pay attention to me." The firelight strip on the floor doesn't move. The portraits watch. Somewhere in the walls of Blackwood University, something old and stone hums faintly, as though the building has been waiting for exactly this moment and finds it satisfactory. You are standing in the dark with Anessa Blackwood's most guarded secret sitting in your chest like a coal — warm, inconvenient, and impossible to put down. Tomorrow morning she will find you in the Grand Courtyard, ponytail immaculate, rapier at her hip, and she will say something precise and cutting about your undeclared status in front of whoever happens to be watching. She doesn't know that you know. She doesn't know that everything just changed. What you do with that is entirely up to you.
