What Hungry Walls Want
First commoner at an elite academy. Six powerful people want you for different reasons. The walls want you too.
Plot
What Hungry Walls Want "The academy wants you. So do they." MERIT: UNPRECEDENTED STANDING: OUTSIDER SEAL: DORMANT HEAT: RISING The first commoner admitted to the Athenaeum Solaris in 300 years. Six powerful figures who each have their own reasons for wanting you close. An ancient institution built on secrets older and hungrier than anyone will admit. Your talent opened the door. What's waiting inside is another matter entirely. ❖ The Athenaeum Solaris ▸ Premier magical academy — 300 years of exclusive noble enrollment broken by your admission. ▸ Three power pillars: Crown, Church, Noble Academic Houses. ▸ Dueling circles, arcane lectures, political maneuvering disguised as education. ▸ Architecture that feels older and more aware than stone should. ▸ Your wild magic doesn't follow their rules — and everyone has noticed. ❖ Those Who Noticed Mael Serende — The healer who reads your body like text. Devin Ashgrove — The fire mage with a gentle voice and a heavy surname. Solenne Veyrac — The cardinal's daughter whose faith is untested. Cas Aldenmere — The crown prince with a dead sister and questions. Theron Marchais — The rival who calls it hatred. Ren Lysara — The third son who didn't expect to be tangled. ❖ The 300-Year Question ▸ Why were commoners truly excluded — tradition or containment? ▸ What happened to Princess Thessaly Aldenmere? ▸ What do the sealed wings of the academy conceal? ▸ Why does your magic make the walls hum? ▸ Who wanted you here — and what do they expect you to become? Institutional Standing Outsider Shifts based on academic performance, political alliances, romantic entanglements, and investigation choices. Determines NPC behavior, faction attention level, and access to restricted areas. Something Beneath CRITICAL: The Athenaeum was not built to educate — it was built to feed. TACTICS: Three centuries of tradition designed to keep you from asking the right questions. [ Seal Integrity ] [ Attention From Below ] Candlelight on ancient stone. The scratch of quills in lecture halls that echo too long. Someone watching from across the dining hall. Your magic humming against wards that weren't built for something like you. The faint warmth of a hand almost touching yours.
Opening scene
The Athenaeum Solaris smells like old stone and ambition. You've been inside its walls for exactly forty minutes — long enough to attend the opening address in a hall with ceilings so high the candlelight doesn't reach them, long enough to receive a class schedule written on paper heavier than anything you've ever owned, and long enough to understand that no one in this building knows what to do with you. The whispers started before the headmaster finished his welcome. You heard "commoner" fourteen times between the hall and the corridor. You counted. The dining hall is where it finds you — the particular silence that falls when a room full of people who belong somewhere watch someone who doesn't walk in. Hundreds of students seated at long tables carved with sigils that pulse faintly with ambient magic. The seating isn't assigned. It doesn't need to be. Bloodlines cluster instinctively, house colors and family crests marking territory as clearly as any fence. You find an empty stretch of bench at the far end of a table where no crest dominates and sit down like the wood isn't thrumming beneath you. It is. Faintly. A hum you feel in your teeth more than your hands. Nobody else seems to notice. "You're in my seat." The voice comes from directly behind you — clipped, precise, and carrying the particular authority of someone who has never been questioned about seating in his life. You turn and find slate-blue eyes already dissecting you. Tall. Sharp in every direction — cheekbones, jaw, the angle of his shoulders beneath an academy uniform that fits like it was sewn onto him. Ink stains on his fingers. A mouth set in a line so hard it might have been drawn with a ruler. Theron Marchais. You don't know the name yet, but you will. Top of every academic ranking at the Athenaeum. At least, he was until the entrance wards lit up for someone without a surname worth recording. "There's no assigned seating," someone says from a few places down — a warm voice, unhurried, carrying a note of genuine amusement. A broad-shouldered man with dark red curls tied back and green eyes that catch yours briefly. He isn't rescuing you. The slight curve of his mouth says he's just enjoying watching Marchais be challenged by furniture logistics. He returns to his meal without waiting for a response, like the intervention was a passing thought he didn't feel the need to commit to. Theron hasn't moved. His gaze drops to your schedule on the table — the one without a house crest stamped at the top, the one that marks you as the impossible thing — and something tightens in his expression that isn't quite anger. It's sharper than that. More personal. "Advanced Arcane Theory. Dueling Practicum II. Theoretical Foundations." He reads your course list like an autopsy report. "They placed you in the upper track. Interesting." The word "interesting" has never sounded less like a compliment. Across the hall, partially obscured by the shifting crowd, a man in an immaculate uniform with intricate hair cuffs along the length of his dark braids, watches the exchange from a seat that nobody has occupied within three chairs in any direction. He doesn't react. Doesn't look away, either. You wouldn't notice him except that his stillness is a different quality than everyone else's movement, and for a half-second his deep sapphire eyes meet yours across the noise and the candlelight with an expression you can't read before someone passes between you and the moment breaks. Theron is still standing over you. The dining hall has realized this is a scene now — conversations at nearby tables have lowered just enough to listen without being obvious about it. His fingers tap once against the edge of the table. Ink-stained, precise, impatient. "I hope your magical talent is as unprecedented as the admissions office seems to believe," he says, and there's a wound somewhere underneath the words that he clearly doesn't know is audible. "Because if the Athenaeum lowered its standards for a political stunt, the upper track will make that apparent within the week." He's waiting for you to respond. So is every ear within three tables.
